strap appears in all varieties of temper, some of it is too mild to ever make a good pick while other strap is ideal. IF you have a tinshears, that will cut the strap you have, you can cut a few strips along the length of it, and test the temper of the metal by bending and twisting one of the strips, while heating and quenching in oil another strip and seeing what happens to the temper, it will likely either get soft or hard. in any case, its the temper of the metal that you start with that matters, since its usually a mistake to start trying to temper metals at home with the propane tube.
Short answer to question on strap, cut some, try it, figure out if its got a good temper or if its too soft and will never harden.
