What the heck pinning?? (icore A3)

Postby WOT » 13 Feb 2007 3:03

I disassembled this Best core set under an A3 system. It's quite common to see empty stacks to accomodate many keys, but this is the first time I've seen someone do this:

One of the seven stacks was built like this:

(top)
(build up)
1
1
1
1
1
1
0
Total stack height = 16, 7 usable cuts, 0-7, single step progression.
Basically, the stack was setup to accept every valid cut available for that system.

What's a compelling reason to make a stack like that rather than leaving that stack out?

was it just the pin one pins stack set up like this? then again ive taken 2 of these apart and theres always about 3/4 pins plus the driver in a few of the stacks.

this sort of setup is also used in something called a zero lock, not what was being done here (If its just the one stack) but im not sure if this comes under advanced topics so i wont explain any more on that.

Usually there are 3 or 4 pins per stack in Best cores.

Bottom, mater, build up and top. It is a unique system. The total height of each pin stack is exactly the same and there are as many types of top pin as there are master and build up pins, while most locks usually one have one to three different types of top pins.

Minimum required is 3 pins. Bottom pin, build up and top pin, as you need control line bitting as well.

Minimum for master keyed core is 4 pins.

It's normal to have 5 pins total to allow say, cut #0, cut #2 and cut#6, but when the chamber is enabled to accept EVERY possible cuts for that particular chamber, I don't understand the motive.
