Yale X5, tight pins!

Postby random » 16 Feb 2007 10:04

I bought a 6 pin yale X5 as I had read on here that they contained mainly spool pins and I felt its about time I began to practice on them. last night i opened it up and took all but 2 spool pins out to practice on. Before this however I thought I'd have a go at single pin picking it just to see what it was like. The first thing I noticed was that now matter how little tension I put on it the front pin would false set all the time I don't think i could be any lighter as i was barely touching the wrench that not even enough to bend skin if that makes sense!.

Anyway when repinning it later I removed the keyway and turned it over to dump the bottom pins into a box and the front pin and pin 3 wouldn't come out, although each would rise and fall in their barrels to and from the shear line, when I applied a bit of pressure with a my half diamond each popped straight out ..Is it normal for pins to behave this way?

Apologies if I come off as a newb...its because I still am :)

that's a tuff pick you've gone for!

yes some pins are tight it's just down to the lock
being mass produced.

try lubing it with some graphite.

Thanks for the response bonez, :)

A tough pick indeed- It took me a while with just 2 of the spools and nothing else but then I'm new to the feel of them.

Would the tightness of these bottom pins make them more likely to false set though? It should be said that the front pin was a steel anti drill one not a spool.

try making yourself a longer tension wrench
and just touch the end to hold it in position!

try rocking the pick on the false set pins till they set
in the true position,if not try making a bogota these work
well on yales.

or buy a set from rai

hope this helps

Longer tension wrench...will try that one for sure,

I made the bogotas a while back and although i'm sure mine are nowhere near the quality of rai's -- they rock!

make yourself a lot of different wrenches!

diffent lenghts, widths,shapes,etc.
experiment with them i have probably
as many wrenches as picks.

let us know how you get on.

Could be grease or oil holding the pins in or more likely theres a bit of a burr on the holes that you have now likely cracked off,
