Cylinder length

Every site that sells mortise cylinders asks you what size you want to order. They have sizes of usually 1", 1 1/8" and 1 1/4" to choose from.

How do you measure a mortise cylinder though? From the surface of the face of the lock to the tail piece? From right below the lock face to just shy of the tail piece? I'm a little confused and don't want to order the wrong size cylinders.

what do you need a cyl for picking? any size will do.
for your door 1 1/8" should generally do for your home.
you should measure the one your replacing.
also security rings and spring collars will help
make sure you order the correct tailpiece with the cyl if you need a replacement.
03 is brass,26d and 626 are silver brushed,613 or 605 are antique color

Oh some 1" cyls you cant pin to 6 pins some will accept 6 pin keys some wont.so watch if you ever need to interchange 5 and 6 pin keys /cores.

These locks would not be for my home but for picking purposes. And you got my point right on target, smaller cylinders have less pin stacks while longer ones tends to have 6 stacks or maybe 7, not really sure. Thats the reason I asked this question.

I'm planning on buying a Mul-T-Lock cylinder soon and by the looks of some of the pictures, the smaller cylinders seems to have smaller pin configurations. If I'm gonna blow $50 to $100 on a high security lock, I might as well get a decent one then something I could risk getting bored of in a few years. Hmm, maybe I'm getting too ahead of myself here...

1" cylinders for North American key ways are usually 5 pin and 1 1/8 will be 6 pin. All of my Multlock cylinders are 1 1/8 and I don't recall any of the high security cylinders that I have worked with coming in a 1" length with the exception of Medico
