This is the old Locksmith business info area and will be broken down to fill in the new sections below.

transsexual locksmiths ?

Postby onewheelchick » 23 Feb 2007 12:41

Hello, I'm interested in members views on how customers would re-act/greet a male to female transsexual locksmith?

Thanks

tough question :?

i would treat you like any other locksmith.
it doesn't matter if they were straight/gay/male/female/whatever as long as they were competent at their job.

i suppose now and again you'd get a customer who would be offended but you'll get that whatever job you do.

My opinion is that for 90% of customers they wouldn't care either way. 5% might have a problem but only a small percentage of those would voice their issues but they are the people who have a problem with everyone. The other 5% would probably see it as a cool selling point. Seriously. Look at the number of gay/lesbian/transsexual specific businesses in Brighton for proof that it works as a marketing strategy with an excellent customer retention rate.

In the end I think it boils down to how you present yourself. Hairy-arsed sweaty grunting locksmiths with egg down their vest are far more of a negative image that someone who is dressed in a corporate uniform, is friendly, communicative, open and isn't a soap-dodger. All genders of tradesmen could do with remembering that tho, customers expect a professional to look a certain way and behave in a certain manner - do that and I'm sure you would fit in perfectly.

Dude, I think the question was pretty clear...

To answer the question though: No, it wouldn't make much difference to be honest - I've known people who had far more unique habits and dress senses that I've associated with. If you can get me into my house during a lockout with professionalism, and relative speed then You can turn up in a gimp suit for all I care.

Personally i dont think its an image that i would like to put across if i was a cross dresser but i guess its dependant on how good you look dressed up,

If you are mistakeable as a lady then it would be fine with the public i reckon but if your 30 stone with a beard and burping habbit then turning up dressed in a skirt scratching your balls isnt exactally what most people want to see opening their door,

Be prepared for a lot of discrimination and loss of customer base or not even getting one,

People have a nasty habbit of throwing out anyone whos differant and i suggest takign your hobby to work in this case wouldnt work well for you but i would love to be proved wrong,

If you promise not to kick their back doors in I'm sure they won't have a problem  And you don't have to hide behind your signature Pinky, we knew all along.

transsexual locksmiths?

Postby onewheelchick » 23 Feb 2007 14:59

Great....thanks boys, girls and whoever for good replies. Of course the word transsexual conjures up many different perceptions. The image I am suggesting as transsexual is a born male wishing to live life as a female with perhaps intentions of sex re-assignment surgery, and not the other end of the spectrum as a hairy chest and ass cross dresser.
I'm glad that using the condition mite give my advertising an edge...oops, oh well.
Anyway can't stay here all day, got some picking to practice :)

We have a bit of an honor system to keep the discussion clean from swear words. Failing that, the censorship is forced upon you.

BTW, I don't understand the point of your question here. Are you really that insecure about your life decisions, and if so, why did you make them in the first place? There's something much deeper here than whether or not you'd be fit to become a locksmith.

That, or you're just trolling us for a response or to start a heated flame about "icky icky body mutilation". I have serious doubts that you are in fact cross-gendered, and but perhaps male, pimply and 15.

I think it would all come down to professionalism. I couldn't care if my contract service person was purple (admiting if they were purple i'd stare at them) as long as they conducted themselves appropriately and professionally.

I had always thought you'd look greasy and sleazy after reading your posts - after seeing photos of you, I was sooooooooo wrong.

Now stop being a total jerk and answer the question, or stop trolling yourself.

Personally, I'm a tolerant person, and if I've locked myself out of my home at -25*C, the last thing I'd be thinking of would be "Geesh, I hope that guy who's coming to rescue me from freezing ain't no transsexual!". Just an example.
Generaly speaking, what's the difference? If you do your job well, the customer will (must) be satisfied.

I was doing a renovation of a house some while back. A girl I know was looking for work painting, and I was looking for a painter, she got the job.
The client was not impressed! He did not consider that a girl was able to do the job, I assured him that she was.
I know a girl that makes window blinds, her biggest problem is when she calls out most people are expecting a guy to call !!!
Like it or not most people have a "vision" of who should be doin what, if you don't meet that expectation your on an uphill battle to gain the confidence of the client.
Most of us don't experience this as most of us fit the expected profile, for those that don't they will tell you it's not easy.

Sexism is still rampant, silly as it may sound. Racism is also still rampant, it may be OK to some people to have a gay guy cut your hair, but not fix your taps. And I really would not fancy being a CD/TG and trying to make a living in an area where it's expected that a "bloke" will be doing the job.

I know a locksmith who's wife know's as much about lock's as he does, yet most people want to talk to the "guy", they don't believe that his wife is as good as he is. And she is !

The locksmith business is a "male" business, I would bet that a lady would have a hard time getting accepted into it, she would have to be committed and put up with a lot of sexism. I am not talking about fellow locksmiths, I'm talking about the worst people on this planet "the public"!

The public are a vicious breed of people, they will rip you apart, they will tear your heart out. They don't care if you helped them in a sticky situation in -40, they will just remember that it was a gay/black/smelly/CD/female/whatever nasty type person, that they had to put up with while the job was being done.
They may thank you, but it will be a hollow thanks, and don't expect any callbacks.

I admire your courage, but I would caution you, your setting yourself on a difficult path.
Good luck with the venture :-)
