making home made pick handles.

Postby jimmysmith » 26 Feb 2007 1:40

I just started up a home pick set. I have always bought my sets but this afternoon I hit an old hack saw blade to a grinder and i was amazed with what I came up with. so for that.....I want to make a set.

I know some time ago I seen some post on making handles but i can't seen to find any...any help would be great.

I am looking for ways and ideas to make the handles. like rubber....or painted...or electrical tape....that type of thing.

if any one has some ideas.....or can stear me in the right direction.... Id appreciate it.

You could use electrical shrink wrap. electrical tape is really ugly (thats what I have on mine)

You can try a glue gun stick and attempt making your very own version of the souber picks. :D
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Yes Heatshrink tubing works very well, that's what I always use. It's also worth noting that not all heatshrink tubing is the same, some have adhesive inside (shrinks and sticks), some do not (shrinks only). I find the type with adhesive inside is better. When I do it, I cut it so that it shrinks around the shoulders at both ends of the handle nicely, I then use just a little drop of "Liquid Electrical Tape" to finish off the tiny bit that's left exposed at the butt of the handle. The finished product looks very nice and is quite comfortable to hold. I'd post pictures but both my camera and my photography skills suck so I've never been able to get a decent picture of any of my homemade picks.

Phil.

I'm a big fan of adding more metal to the handle for a thicker grip, and then dipping the handle in this stuff called "grip dip." Its like a plastic rubber. You find it on wrench handles and stuff like that. Find it at your hardware store. I'll post pics of my new pick set I'm making with it in a few days.

Postby butterboy » 1 Mar 2007 11:38

I just saw some stuff at ace hardware , It's a can that you dip what ever tool you want a handle on and just let it dry, shazam ,handle. Ive also tryed heat shrink, it's cool because there are alot of differnt colors, But i find i have a better feel with out any handle at all,but thats just me..

good luck.
