SOUTHORD C2010 SET

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

SOUTHORD C2010 SET

Postby Locks2Pick » 28 Feb 2007 1:41

Just brought and recieved the Southord C2010 Set from http://www.locksmith-tools.co.uk/

I was just wondering if anyone has this set? Know what locks it's good with and what picks to use, I'm new to lock picking and I was just curious as to what locks I can buy to practise on, padlocks, house locks and car locks (not sure if you can buy car locks though..) Any videos or information would be good. Also for a certain lock, if you could state or picture the tool for it, would help me alot in learning.

Thanks in advance :)

We dont do lists here as each person would have a differant list,

Pretty much most picks can be used for most locks depending on skill and lock type, theres not any specific tool for a particular lock,

That said many will say grab a hook and wrench and you will travel but its not the case, practice and learn the tools you use better than the others,

You need to have a read around the stickies as any question you have right now or in the next 3 months is already answered many many times over,

Click my www button for a great guide on everything you need o know right now,

Forget the discussion of vehicle locks on here, its for the advanced sections only but yes you can buy car locks from the dealers, spares places, junk yards or e-bay,

Shrub hit the nail on the head.

One thing I wish to add, specifically regarding the C2010(but I think it applies to a lot of SouthOrd sets) - there is a wide selection of picks included - so many, that after heaps of experimentation/experience, you will likely find you end up only using a few of them almost exclusively...but the selection of tension wrenches is very limited.

At that point you are in a great position to make some of your own tools, knowing what modifications you can apply to suit your picking style even better, as well as experimenting with the picks made by other(more expensive) manufacturers in the styles you prefer.

As mentioned, the C2010 set has many picks included, but the tension tools included are quite limited. There are quite a few included, but if you compare the functionality and design of them, you will see there is very little useful variation. This does allow for modification of some of those which are included to provide a more versatile selection.

I would recommend adding to these by making your own. It is very easy and there is plenty of information here on site. You will be able to design tension tools to suit your needs and preference as you gain experience.

Many accomplished pickers on this site have more tension tools than picks! Having a tension tool that will not slip in a given keyway, whilst leaving as much room as possible for the pick to move is a great asset - and for this reason it is worthwhile becoming comfortable with applying tension ath the top of the keyway when appropriate.

I'd reccommend immediately making a few tension tools which allow you to comfortably apply tension at the top of the keyway because the C2010 set lacks any wrench which can be comfortably used in this manner.

Overall, I'd say the C2010 is an excellent set, if affordable. A beginner could also get starded spending a lot less on a smaller set, or buying a few individual picks....and some DIY tension wrenches - they really are SO easy to make!

Forgot to say, SO picks MUST be lightly sanded along the edges when you buy them as they have small burrs on them which arent good for picking,
