What model BEST? Warning large pics ahead.

Hey everyone,

I just received a Best lock from one of my buddies. As stated before I have people looking out for old locks for me. I don't know much about this one. I appears that the keyway has been marred with something. Screwdriver? Apparently the keys were missing and this baby was headed for the trash.

I have looked on the unit and cannot find any model reference. I am also not intimately familiar with the Best brand.

Regardless, it took me less than 2 mins to pick it. Any idea what model this is? Is it possible for me to remove the core? I have read here about picking the core to removable sheer point. I think that's the terminology.

Being that it has a removable core. What can I do with it other than pick it... if anything?

Sorry for the huge crappy photos. Hopefully they will suffice.

Thx

Big E

As another side note, tinypic removes the pics after 30 days so its not a good idea to use it for site,

That lock looks like it does have a removable core look for a screw inside the shackle hole.

It's an SFIC. You can make an SFIC tension tool and try to pick the control shearline, or you can drill out the plug and use the padlock body with another core. I would just keep it around and use it for picking practice if I was you.

Google, "Matt Blaze SFIC" for breakdown photos.

The keyway looks pretty beat up.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Thanks guys,

Yea, it looks like someone really gave the keyway a beating. It picked cleanly though.

I have a feeling this one will be for practice.

People don't seem to realize the significant risk letting loose a BEST lock like that. From the core, it looks like the lock belongs to a system and if the said key system is still in use, there's a good chance that padlock getting loose would compromise the entire system.

quite possibly. but I don't think its one we need to be concerned about. it would be easier to take it to a locksmith and have them make you a new control key than it would be to learn to pick to control.

Congratulations BTW. they can be tricky to pick in my experience.

Picking a BEST padlock is what finally killed my favorite pick. I should have put up a picture in the graveyard. Sigh. I loved that pick.

I certainly wouldn't make somebody a new control key if they brought me a padlock like this. It would just seem too shady, WOT has the right idea.

The best you'll get from a respectable locksmith is probably having it drilled.

my point is getting keys isn't hard. my locky happily cuts keys without question.

And I wont go in to details as the questions weren't asked (and wouldn't anyway) but we all know keys are easy to come by and some one that was "a bit shady" would go after they key not want to learn pick the lock. especially with a lock like this.

Just my 2 cents. anyway lets get back on topic.

BTW that wasn't me saying we shouldn't show caution but i think in this specific case. a SFIC that a member has picture of. i wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I cant say i would have ant interest in having a control key for this lock. Not worth the trouble. i also wanted to show the lock opened to dispell any notions that this lock was obtained unlawfully. Hopefully as I build my reputation here this will not be an issue.

I would not have thought about this lock being a security issue. I have to admit that i wont mention it either. I would hate to see my free lock supply dry up. I know where they are going.

I do have plans to visit a couple of personal storage companies today .I will see what they have for the trash. Maybe I will get lucky .

being able to open the control sleeve is hands as it means you can swap the cores in this padlock instead of buying more of the same padlock.

I cant see it being an issue SFICs have been discussed before but im sure a mod will let us know if there is a problem.

As long as you have permission to take locks before they are trashed thats fine. as long as you are given full permission from the owner.

All the best
