New At Picking. What locks?

Hey, I'm new at picknig, just recieved my Southord C2010 Set yesterday, where should I start?! lol. Watch videos and read tuturiols etc. I'm guessing I should start with padlocks? I'm assuming they would be the easiest to get a feel for lock picking and how to feel for pins etc? lol, must seem like a total n00b. Any helps or certain good practise locks to start on would be great.

Get a cylinder not a padlock, many make the mistake of getting a padlock then getting stuck,

A cylinder can be made easier to pick for learning then the configeration changed repeatedly to make it a new lock to pick,

A small Panavise or hobby vise is useful too to hold the cylinder lock in place. Picking while holding the lock in your hand can sometimes be difficult, i know it is for me. But make sure the jaws for the hobby vise is plastic, nylon or rubber. A metal jaw can cause the cylinder to warp more easily because you can often close down the vise on the lock too tight.

Although padlocks can be easy to pick, the warding in some can become an issue due to the tight warding compared to let's say a Quickset.

As a beginner, it would be bestly suggested to get a Quickset (no security pins) or a cheap knock-off and learn on that. With the warding tolerances you will have better luck dealing with the pins instead of fighting withe pins and warding.

Once you have gotten better with pin and tension reaction aswell as feedback you can get into locks with smaller keyways, tight warding, padlocks and so forth for a greater challenge.
