Home made security top pins..

Postby jimmysmith » 7 Mar 2007 22:34

Well .. I was thinking of going to my local locksmith shop and asking if i can buy some security pins from him for this crapy kwickset I got in my practice lock collection. I am not sure if he would sell me some for i have not asked yet..so anyway i am sitting here playing with my little rotory tool i got from harbor frieght ...and it came to me.. home made top security pins..
so i grabed normal some top pins and made some spool pins.. I took out of the center but didnt touch ether ends of the pin..
I think they turned out pretty cool looking..
has any one ever done this around here...?

I will put up some pictures in a little while.. for now i am going to get these pins back in the lock and see if i did something good or if i screwed myself.

I am impressed. After making those pins. I made three, and putting them in a kwickset lock.. It actually made it harder,,,it was fun they felt like real security pins.. faulse sets and everything. I love this stuff.

I did spp it open.. and then bumped it to.. and the key still works great,,,

I am thinking of putting home made security pins in the lock on my front door.

home made serrated bottom pins

Postby jimmysmith » 7 Mar 2007 23:05

wow....i just did something sweet. While i had my kwickset deadbolt opened because i was filling it with home made security top pins. I noticed that 2 of the 5 bottom pins where very long. most likely an 8 or 9 cut on the key... anyway.. so i got to thinking.. grabbed my rotory tool and attempted to make the top of the bottom pin serrated...and sure enough...it not to bad looking.. I put the lock back together and i have not picked it yet... and its been about 15 minutes or picking.. I LOVE IT...
and the key still works..
Why have i not thought about this before.

has anyone else tryed this?

Any chance of getting a picture? Maybe when you get some factory made security pins you could do a comparison?

Are you using the tool to spin the pin and cut with a file or are you just cutting around the pin with a disk?

home made security pins.

Postby jimmysmith » 9 Mar 2007 14:51

I cut around the pin with a mine cutter wheel disk. It worked well. there was some sharp edges when i was done so i did a little sanding.. and they are pretty smooth.
I am sure they dont compair to real security pins but it sure was fun to play around with it..
the lock is a heck of a lot harder to pick now.. give fause sets.. you get the security pin 10 dagree turn.. ... it sure as heck cant be raked open.. well i bet some of you can rake it.. but..for me its obviously diffrent then it used to be. ..
I will put up a pic of my pins in a few.
got to get the kids to school right now..

later.

If anything, they might be more effective than machined security pins. I can't see how having identical security pins helps anything.
