When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Went to the flea market today and while I was browsing around, I ran into a cheap tool booth with $2.00 generic slim jims. I picked up two and each one should give me stock to make 9 picks of a roughly standard size (similar to a southord piece).
Whenever I get the time to try these out, I'll take some pictures of the material and also of the finished picks for those interested.

If they are nice slim jims don't cut them up.

They will likely be too thick for picks, but I could be wrong.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

I was goign to say the same thing,
Can you measure them and decide if they are too thick or not because thinning down the material will likely damage the pick to be honest (unless your careful and good at grinding)

The stock I have measures 0.028" thick, 1.25" wide, and circa 24" in length. I rough cut a falle deep curve last nite and need to pick up some some new sanding and polishing material to finish it.
As far as them being good slim jims, they aren't. I have a full kit of slim jim brand slim jims for auto lockouts and they are definitely made from a higher grade stock. These are $2 ones from the flea market but depending on how these turn out, I'll consider making some from the better (more expensive) stock.

The good quality slim jims are usually thicker from what I've seen. I have a couple from Pro-Lok and some from a local 98 cent store anf the Pro-Lok slim jims are way thicker and more sturdier.

do 98 cent stores sell slim jims in California? I've never seen any store carry pick/bypass tools in Washington or Oregon.

Yeah, they sell them. You'd be surprised at what these cheapie stores sometimes carry, I was shocked too. Unfortunately the store closed down a year or so ago. No big deal really cos I don't like slim jims in the first place anyways.

The last place I seen them in california, coming back to texas was a truck stop. If i'm not mistaking it was priced under $10...I think it was a Flying-J's truck stop.
It may not be of good quality, perhaps like the ones you would find at a dollar store, just overpriced for (convinence <-SP?).

I think its discussion is limited to the advanced forum. However wikipedia details some basics about what it is and some of the risks of using it.

They sell them at any 7/11 convenient stores, usually arranged up by the register. They're cheap and about 30 of them can fill up a single guy who doesn't know how to cook.

So I finished some picks from these cheap slim jims and they work pretty well. I made a copy of the Falle deep curve as well as a bogota of Raimundo's design. I will post pictures sometime tomorrow night after I locate my camera.
I finally received my bristles from Spossum (who I'd like to thank for sending so many of them, so quickly) and will post some pictures of what I crank out tomorrow
