Ace Hardware (among others) carries acid core solder (all-in-one) and/or acid flux. Either one is useful for most any non-electrical purpose. For electrical work you need to use the more common Rosin Core solder.

to all of your questions yes you really do need acid core solder
I got mine at sears
and also the solder is very picky about what it wants to adhere to and you really need to make sure that you sand the metal or the solder won't stick
because really all solder is the same the different is the flux

Use plumbers solder and separate flux,

Make sure you sand the metal first,

Heat the metal up as hot as possable then start putting the spring in there and heating both adding a bit of solder,

Careful you dont over heat the spring if useing a flame as it will damage it,

I havent used my wrenches and to be honest i doubt i will, the first uk hobby picker with over 30 posts to pm me their name and address can have them to try out themselves, they arent perfect but for 5 mins work they are better than a kick in the teeth,
