Is It The Same Thing?

Postby GoatRoper93 » 14 Mar 2007 0:22

Ok, I'm brand new an like all the others I've read all the guides, the whole enchilada... But hey you gotta start somewhere so I figured what the heck, right? I've heard mnay things like "kwikset" and "master no.3" but I found an new Brinks lock about the same size as a master no. 3 lock and i was wondering if it was the same thing.

Hmm....Ive never picked a Brinks before cos I dont care much for padlocks but if I remember correctly lots of Brinks padlocks employs security tumblers. Whether this particular lock has them or not I have no clue. Try picking it and see what happens.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

From my experience with the lower class brinks locks they are exactly like the master lamanated locks, and no security pins.

it's not until you get into the higher end padlocks that you get into the security pins ect...

Actually my first padlock i've ever picked was a brinks.

As you may have already read please don't practice on locks you rely on. and to start out with something simple, like a kwickset that you have taken apart using Digital_blue's guide.

It's in there somewhere. and BTW welcome and enjoy your stay

Brinks and master are both good padlocks to start with for beginners. Depending on the quality your brinks padlock may or may not have spool pins. Master #3s do not. You're looking at 4 pin stacks though, which is the same as master.

In short, no they're not the same, it's not that different.

Ok, are the kwikset locks expensive or are they about the same as a master no. 3?

Thanks for the replies so quick too

Sorry chief, but the link just links to hardware, and not a specific lock.

Any cheap weiser, kwikset or knockoff should do. You may wish to avoid schlage for now.

Like this- http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN ... =100070559

It should make a fine starter lock. I know I have a few Kwiksets kicking around here too.....

Just make a run to the hardware store, get yourself a few master #3s and a kwikset or two.
