I can't pick the Abus 65/50 padlock :(

I'm quite a newbee, so i started with some really cheap padlocks first. A friend of mine gave me 3 of them, and after some trying i picked them all. Then i moved on to my bike lock. Which is a a bit more expensive, but i also picked that lock within 15secs. I tried picking some door locks, but no succes. When i release the tension, i hear some clicks, but i have got no clue if i'm doing it the right way. I thought those locks are maybe too difficult for me, so i tried the padlock of our gate. It's a Abus 65/50 and these are pics of it:





I can't even seem to set one pin It's really frustating. When i use the standard pick and go all the way into the lock, it often gets almost stuck there. I was really motivated with picking locks after those picked locks, until i found this one. I have no clue of what i'm doing wrong. I used every pick i have, but to no avail.

I opened the lock with 2 shims, but that's no fun! I want to do it the hard and learnful way.

I made some progression and i get 4 clicks when i release the tensionwrench, when i work with the normal picking tool. The one left of the lock on the first image.

But i read you can also overset pins. I'm not sure if i'm doing that.

And i also read something about a possibility of security pins?

Ok, I'm fairly new to this as well. But i think i might be able to help you out a bit. Anyone out there with more experience correct me where wrong.

I find that if your having trouble setting pins and you know your picking in the right order. Just put a bit too much pressure on the wrench. Then push the pin up, If you have the right amount of pressure the pin will get stuck (either on the shear line, or if its a security pin then on one of the cuts in it). Now when it gets stuck let up on pressure with your wrench (keeping the same ammount of pressure on the pick), and then when your pick can push the pin further push it a tiny bit further. Then you can put more pressure on the wrench, and if its not stuck on a cut in the security pin, then it will set. And if im correct then when it sets, the plug should move a bit more than before.

Abus locks usually have five pins.One standard driver pin(usually the first one) and the other four are security pins.These locks can be quite hard
for someone just starting out. You would be better off getting a deadbolt cylinder as you can remove the pins and when you are comfortable with it add security pins one at a time. This guide will show you how to repin a cylinder www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=10505

But if you "really" want to open this one now you should do a search for security pins.

wow.. I didnt think that lock would shim.. I know it do it it would yake two shims for that lock but.... those brass looking locks most the time have a tight fitting shackle.. especially an abus..

and about picking it... thats a harder lock to be learning on.. has security pins.. follow the crows advice.. you will open it ...all in good time..

I indeed need two shims for that. It's quite tight, so i fist have to put them both in, with just the tip of the shims. Then slighty push one and turn a bit, then the other, then the other one again a bit further until it's in, and then the other one again until it's in. Then the lock pops open.

I think i'll go to the store to buy a common cylinder lock to try on first. I can pick a few locks, but i have the idea i still don't really have the feeling yet. Often i just try some pins, but actually most of the time i guess it's more luck than wisdom. I think need some practice with a fairly cheap door lock. I have to understand what i'm doing and i need to get the hang of it. I know the theory, but doing is is another story. I really have difficulties with finding out which pin really sets and in which order i need to set them. I also seem to have troubles with oversetting them. Maybe i put too much pressure on the tension wrench?

I would get a dead bolt. there are cheep.. and you can re-pin them. for better practice. and theres no spring tension on the cylinder. there really fun to play with. there are many exercise's you can do to inprove your lockpicking skills with a cheep dead bolt.

Yes putting tomuch tension on the wrench will get you all messed up.. only use as much tension as you need.. find that point.. rake the lock hold diffrent tensions.. find the point where tension is still being applies but only enough that you need..
as far as over setting the pins.. that tends to happen a lot in smaller keyway locks and something i have found to be very helpful is to actually insert your tension wrench at the top of the keyway.. it give you more room to work your picks. try it out...for the heck of it.. if the lock is not opening because you are over setting the pins..this will help.

i have a lock that looks just like that but it says UHAUL on it and under that it says N._ 85/50
Ive seen ones that say 85/50 and other things and its killing me trying to figure out what that means,does anyone know? ive seen 85/50 and 65/50 so far alot


and btw mine is very hard to pick also it took me quite a while to get it and i still cant do it consistently,the only difference i see between my uhaul and your abus is that my keyway is pretty much straight with small square rails in it while yours is jagged

anyone who has any info on what those markings mean please post, i really am curious to know

take a snake pick set all the pins then take a hook pick and geuss and chech the first one it might be a security pin or it might set above the shear line

Than put the snake pick in all the way to the bottom (the bumb side to the pins).
Then just put some tension on your wrench and it pops open.

With your lock it seems the snake-pick is working the way a profile-pick works.

This will only work with the lock you have and ones with a VERY VERY similar key bitting - you won't be able to stick that rake into other Abus 65/50, and then expect it to open just by turning the tension wrench!!
