What pick set for italy? Normal o slim?

Postby AndyTheGrim » 19 Mar 2007 5:41

Hi to all, i'm andrea from italy :)
I want to buy a pick set to start lockpicking...
Can somone with a direct experience tell me if it's better the standard set or the slim set for italy?

Please dont answer me like "You are from Europe so buy the slim set, but i would a reply from someone that have already tried it with italy locks"

I've read that someone said that slim picks are harder to use that normal pick, is it right?

In the Southord site i've found the MPXS-20-O in the outlet section, can someone tell me if it should be a good set to start for italy (it've 2 double side slim picks too). Some bad experiences with outlets?

Thank's to all :)

PS: sorry for my bad english :D

I was in Italy this Summer, and from looking at the locks I can tell you slim lines are what you need.

Harder to use? No. More fragile? A little because they are smaller and thinner.

If the MPXS-20 set is in your price range you're better off getting the C1510 set or C2010 set, as they are slimline.

So far I've picked cisa and iseo and while it works with normal picks, I prefer slimline. But I don't know SOs slimline picks, I tend to use hpc2000 or Wendt/Lockmaster.
It's not the tools that open the lock. It's me.

Get the slim lines regardless of where you live in the world,

The other bigger size should have been phased out a loooooong time ago,

u really think so??? I guess it comes down to personal preference, If I have the space in the keyway i find it easier with a standard sized SO over the Slimline. Especially on things like my Union locks. bigger surface area on the top of the pick so i drop less pins. Guess its lack of experience...

I wouldnt put it down to experiance rather what you get used to, i simply cant use big picks, i find them too cumbersome hence why i never use a majestic set i haven unless its for poking at a seized up lock lol

I just think that if you would have only had slim lines from get go you wouldnt know any differant and be totally fine with them, i believe noobs should go this route even if in the us,

That way if you then decide to go for a bigger pick at some point youve got the better skill under your belt which is useing smaller picks,

As for strength i dont think it ever comes into it, im fairly confident that both styles of picks would take a very simular breaking force and say its mostly in the pickers mind when useing thinner picks,

When picking a lock there is very rarely a lot of stress put on the pick as there simply doesnt need to be,

If i come in from a night on the lash and try to pick i cant because everything has to be done now and if it isnt its got to be the tools fault,

If i try to pick after a 30 min soak in a hot bath after a nice sunday roast, sitting in front of the tv in a comfy chair i get locks poping in seconds,

The differance is being chilled out, relaxed, methodical and careful in what your doing, rakeing becomes gentle caressing and single pin picking is more like lifting a feather off a cusion of air,

Thx to all, i think that i'll take a slim set :)

So can i pick USA locks with a slim pick too?
It's only a bit harder?

I'll take the set from SO site, it's cheaper than Germany distributor, and the shipment too.
dollar/euro exchange is good for me :)
Unluckly there arent outlets for slim sets, my budget is about 30$ so i'll take the C801 set.

Others suggestions are welcome :)

Thank's again :)

Yes you can pick all locks with the slim lines (skill permitting) but the big ones will only work on keyways that will accept them,

South Ords are a great pick to start with and what i use to this day,

Go to your local garage and collect some of the scrap wiper blades (wind sheild wipers) from the scrap bin then stip them appart and make yourself a load more tension wrenches,

If you are a little daunted by what to do with them click on my www button for a easy to understand guide on all the things someone new would need to know,

I guess thats a big part of it. but i still find my self reachine for different picks for different locks regardless of if i even had those picks when i first opened the lock back when i first started.

My 140s are a good example of this, first opened them with a standard half diamond. if im trying to show someone how simple some locks are to pick i always go for a slimline short hook now.

But this is turning in to a thread hijack. so yes your best bet is to get a slimline pick set. Southord are nice and cheap. and theres nothing wrong with them at all. My petersons are great but slightly more expensive, then again so far they seem much more hard wearing.

Shrub thinks slimline only but i still find myself for a mixture of slimline and standard picks.

All the best

It is of course a personal prefferance thing if your accumplished,

On the selection of pick thing i do agree with you except for the fact i started with slim lines and only have those except the small 8 piece majestic set (broke two remember) which was never used really,

It all depends, he could live in an area that has only Evva locks in which a big pick wouldnt even enter the keyway of or he could have had a local lockie who used imported kwiksets which big picks fall into,

I never knew u used Southord picks, i assumed all the mods on here were on Peterson and Falle (Ive herd the falle are either love or hate things).

See i jumped in at the deep end and ordered picks before ide done enough reading so i had the standard picks. I think it was before i found lp101 and wanted the little book. But i ordered my self some slimlines for the tight keyways.

Now my only problem is resisting buying more and more picks just because i want to try them out.

Nope, ive got the MPS-62 set (i think lol its the biggest set anyway) and thats all i use on the door or at home,

I have other picks but simply dont get on with them so prefer and revert to my SO's,

I dont like the Falles as is documented well on site elsewhere and i dont have any Petersons although the set i saw pictured on a thread here the other day looked reasonable, the one thats $500 or so i think, so i may get them for a try and see if i like them,

The way i always look at things is if it works use it, i started with SO's and just stuck with them, i open locks no problem with them so theres no reason for just to keep buying picks, i only use a handful of the SO's anyway and most are just copies on a set that big,

Hence i always reccomend them to the noobs because i know full well from experiance that someone can start with them and go all the way up to working with them,

All i will say to the OP of this thread is to run over them with a light emry paper (wet and dry paper being the best) and remove the burrs off the edges which i guarentee they will have,

Oooh numbers numbers, i couldnt even begin to start working out how many picks i have, if you count each bit of wire bent specifically for certain lever locks etc i would reckon im in the 1000's of individual tools,
