Texas Apprenticeships/Laws?

As I understand it, the new legislation passed here in Texas forbids you to work as a locksmith unless you're certified. Does anyone know the details of these laws, and whether or not it means you can't be an apprentice locksmith in Texas any more?

As you probably already know, you have to be licensed as a locksmith through the Department of Public Safety (DPS). This requirement, however, applies if you are advertising your services as a locksmith. You may still work as an apprentice with a locksmith company, and that company can license you through DPS. You will get an ID Card that looks the same as the ones issued to security officers in Texas. You can check with the Texas Commission on Private Security for more information, or I can research the specifics and let you know what I find out.

Thanks for your response, that's very helpful to know! I'd given up trying to even apply for a new locksmith job because every site I read about it was so vague (or empty) on details about apprenticeship, and just kept saying "No locksmithing without a license", basically.

Essentially, you can work under someones license (mentor) until you are "trained." Then, you can pay to have your background checked, pay to have a license, pay for insurance and pay for local permits. Then, you can have the title "Locksmith" after your name (Once you pay for your business cards.)

In the mean time, start a lock-out business (take a pistol and a big friend with you.) You'll meet very interesting people and have plenty of "neat" experiences to share.
