Padlock too cheap to pick?

Hi, I am a complete n00b to lock picking (i.e. i've never successfully picked a lock). I bought a cheap padlock for £1 with the intention of trying out lockpicking. I made some picks and have spent hours trying to pick the dam thing (i even made a bump key and that didn't work either). What's wrong? Is the lock so rubbish that it can't even be picked? Or is it just me? I understand how lockpicking works and have read several guides but I just can't seem to get the hang of it.

does the lock have pins? wafers? wards? any pictures.
I believe most all locks can be picked ...especially realy cheep locks.
so for the best help.. post a pic or let us know some information on the lock.. what kind? type? the usual stuff.

Yep i agree, lets have a picture of the lock and the key. a keyway would be nice as well.

Hello again, sorry for the lack of detail. The padlock is a simple 5 pin tumbler lock and is encased in what looks and feels like concrete. It has a metal plate on the front that says "security padlock Am-Tech superior quality".

If its dark gery with a "gold" plate on the front i know the one you mean. they can be a pain to get open. best bet is to get a simple Yale lock for £4 on ebay.co.uk and repin it using DBs guide.

Yeah you got the right one. It' dark gray with the gold plate on the front.Thanks for the advice, could you post a link to a specific item on ebay because i'm not quite sure what to look for.

That kinda thing. u can do your own searching about but don't pay more than £5.00 for a single lock and postage in this case. Yale is just the most common brand. Zone and union are good examples also, DON'T buy a Ross lock, they are cheap but for good reason.

I've finally done it! Since I last posted, I've managed to pick a smaller 3 pin tumbler padlock (which was very easy). And I also bought some 4 pin tumbler padlocks, one of which I managed to pick by luck (I haven't been able to do it since), and of which I made a bump key that works very well.

Thanks . I'm going to keep on practicing until I can do it consistently, and I might even buy a set of picks instead of using makeshift items (a safety pin and a paper clip).
