I need help right away

Postby Camarda » 15 May 2004 23:37

I was repinning a Kwikset 5-pin deadbolt and I was about to put the plug in the follower and it came out a bit and one of the first pins popped out. Now i cant get the cylinder out because the key wont work.

What can I do!

do you mean that once the pin fell out, you rotated the plug to the locked position? if the plug is still half sticking out of the shell, you should be able to use the key (the drivers will just be pushing on different pins) but if not then you will have to pick the lock and make sure that the key pins are nowhere near the drivers when removing the plug next time - then replace the offending pin (after a good talking to) and re-insert the plug.
Oh look! it's 2016!

Reinstalling pins

Postby Romstar » 16 May 2004 0:40

Do you have a dowel of some sort that will fit into the cylinder?

Maybe a small pen light would work, depending on the size of the light. I have a mini flashlight here that I have used as an emergency plug follower.

After you find something to use as a follower, install the spings and pins one set at a time, and then push the follower out with the plug.

Good luck,
Romstar

Hopefully none of the pins or springs were lost.

I surprised myself :D I read a little bit on it and I got a pen cap to follow it. Now I got it set up with two pins in it but I can set up 5 pins easily now 8) . I think it was a good experience because now I understand the lock more.
