Bump Key Templates!

Postby tom55 » 30 Mar 2007 0:11

I need some bump key templates to print out for that I can see what they actually look like.

I need templates because I having trouble making them myself.

You don't really NEED a template you just need to know to keep the "teeth" @ roughly 45 degree slopes and properly spaced at what the pin to pin distance on that model key/lock is.

The beauty of bump-keys is they can actually "break themselves in" by wearing on the points bearing the load. I like to bind the key and give it a few hard whacks and look for marks to file back further. Eventually you get the point where your accurate enough to bump a lock.

besides templates aren't really that accurate they are just guides for mostley non-linear goofy curved shapes we have trouble reproducing thats how I use them anyway.

There is a WEALTH of knowledge here with a steady hand a true interest of picking you will suceed if you read EVERYTHING most of the people who just want to learn this for party tricks or less than moral pursuits give up out of frustration or just fail at it.
If you can't make it work try yelling "aww d*****t!" and throwing your tools it never worked for my pops but it entertained me :)

There's really no such thing that I've ever seen. What you need is space and depth charts. That will tell you how to space your cuts, and how deep to go.

If there was a template, it would still be the hard way to go. Really, all you need to know is the spacing, and the root depth of a 9 cut on the key you're working with. Make a couple marks, and go at it with a square file, using the corner of the file to cut a "V" into the key. Works nicely.

Cheers,
