The Never-Ending Macgeyver Pick Ideas

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Pick Material

Metal Hose Clamps (like the ones around the radiator hose on your car) - I have actually made one and it is one of my fav picks now. A Primary in my set of picks.
Mudd Knife - Used by drywallers to smear drywall mud over nail holes. (This weekends project. Make a "Dragon Tension Tool" out of one my my mud knives.)
Engine Oil Dipsticks - Ya know, the long stick under the hood of a car that my exwife could never seem to find. (Once in a pick form, it might find its way into your pick set)
crochet hooks - come on grandma, give it up. I Made this too. Also a top class key extractor!!
Ring around a pop can - The silver "ring" where the top of the pop can is doubled backed to connect it to the rest of the pop can. The thing you put your bottom lip on when taking a drink.
Starter shims - I am mechanic, so I actually have these laying around. The are placed between your starter and bell housing of your transmission to keep it aligned so it does not grind when you start your car.
License plates - At least the ones I have are the same thinness as wiper inserts.
Heating and Air duct - Look in your basement, that sheet metal is about the correct thinkness for a temp pick.
Rain Gutters - Hey it just might work.

Cell Phone - To call the person that has the spare key!!! (Hey if you are naked in the desert and the only thing that stand between you and an Oasis is a lock, I would for sure be calling somebody.

With the exception of the metal hose clamp, I would not make these picks as part of my set. The material used above would be good for a pick to be used once, maybe twice.

Someone posted above, "the hands of a clock." They are way to thin and brittle, They will bend before the pin is lifted.

Besides it is also a big pain in the arse to extract the hands out of my digital clocks!! :?

Motorcycle rim??? I am not about to destroy my $4,000 crotch rocket to pick a $20 dollar door lock that is on an $80 door/frame. Of course I don't have any extra rims laying around so that would be out of the question for me. ...??... Wait!! My bike don't even have spokes on the wheels!! Never mind!

I think I read somewhere about doing that. Anyone know anything about this type of picking? If its even real?

i would say its deffinatly possible. other than picking another one of my hobbies is paintball. and since i play paintball i found it neccesary to learn about air valves electronics, and the like. to do this you would have to make a blank with air passages and a pnuematic barb on the end run a hose from the barb to an electronic solenoid. connect the solenoid to a paintball gun circuit board(they have adjustable on times ranging from 1 to around 20 milliseconds) and bam pnuematic bump key

McGuaver would be trapped in a storage room and even he could not make a key with air passages in it from nothing. The air pressure would come from the beans he had for lunch and would be forced into the lock through an old drinking straw :D  :D

success rare

Postby raimundo » 31 Mar 2007 11:27

but interestingly, you are opening it without any tools at all. with a tensor and a bump hammer, it could also be done,eh?
that sounds like the method that would work best for the person who is always dealing with the same lock, every day, and it could develope into quite a skill if done repeatedly to the same lock. it would be a great demonstration for someone like marktobias.

Like you raimundo I never seem to get around to posting photo's or video's.

The strike is similar in idea to that of a bump hammer, more of a snap than a blow that follows through. I did also mention the only circumstances the I have been able to make this work, lock type and condition, and I would suspect that the springs are also weak

prob only good for one use...but....

Postby ObiWonShinobi » 11 Apr 2007 3:54

wooden spoke from bottom of a wicker basket?
could be shaped easily...
has JUST ENOUGH strength to lift a pin or two
might make a quick half diamond....
but i would def NOT try to rake with it.

Might put some highly pleasurable pursuits in jeopardy of causing dangerous injury.

I picked a padlock at Goodwill earlier with a couple forks from the silverware aisle. Used the keyway of the lock to bend one fork into a tension wrench, and the other into a primitive pick.

Got some strangle looks from the store workers, but it was locked to the store shelf with no key in sight and i HAD to have it.

Ok i think some of you need to look back at the first post to see what this thread is actually about,

Bypassing is NOT allowed,
The knoblock trick is classed as bypass,

The air pressure thing is not to be discussed in this thread and has been exchaisted elsewhere in a couple of threads, if you cant see them they are not in the public sections so you wilol have to wait until you are,

Lets keep the thread on track and other stuff to the other threads that are more appropreate,

hendrixownsyou, i would also like to know if you bought the lock or not,
Shrub
