So I tryed to pick a room lock with a paper clip...

I read a lot of newbie's guides and watched a bunch of videos on lock picking but they don't answer my questions. Here is what I did: 1) I made a tension wrench of a metal stick a little whicker than a paper clip 2) Made a pick with a paperclip by straightening it and bending to 80 degrees very close to one end 3) I inserted the tension wrench into the bottom part of keyhole (contains 5 pins) 4)Applied a light torque clockwise (that's the right way) 5) Inserted the pick right beneath the pins 6) tryed to push the first pin up but it never set 6) tryed to push other pins but couldn't because the first pin is in the way. Can anyone explain how I am supposed to do that or what I was doing wrong?

PS I think I actually did push the second pin without pushing the first but it didn't set either

First, Do not pick locks you rely on. The binding pin, meaning the 1st pin you need to set is not always the first pin. The pins need to set in the order that they bind to pick the lock. The first pin in your lock did not set because it was not binding. Get yourself a deadbolt and follow the exercise on this link. viewtopic.php?t=10677 It will help you to get to know what pin is binding and needs to be set next. You would also be well off to gat or make yourself real picks. You can find several threads here on pickmaking. Good luck, and have fun

Hey, welcome to the site and such. Everyone gets this lecture so it is not directed at you necessarily...

first off always follow these simple rules:

1) Search before you ask, this makes life better for everyone because there are less repeat threads and we're not answering the same "what is a bump key" type questions over and over.

2) DON'T PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON!!! This means if the lock is attached to a door, cabinet, vehicle, chastity belt, casket, whatever... unless it is there for the SOLE PURPOSE of being picked, DO NOT PRACTICE WITH THAT LOCK. You CAN and WILL break it... and then your in trouble.

3) DONT PICK LOCKS YOU DONT OWN!!! The only thing worse then breaking the lock attached to your sister's chastity belt is breaking a lock you don't own. Unless you are a locksmith or have EXPLICIT permission to pick a lock, with the owner understanding the lock may be damaged, DO NOT PICK IT.

Just a bit more on Rule 3 (Picking locks you don't own)

If someone asks you to pick a lock that they DO rely on, perhaps because they are locked out, ask yourself if you can afford to replace/repair the lock if something bad happens. Nothing worse than offering a good turn, then having to pay for a lock replacement or a locksmith to come correct your mistake. If you don't have the knowledge, tools, parts, or disposable income fix what you stuff up, DON"T PICK THE LOCK.

Can anyone show how a paperclip pick should look like? Also when you lift the pins at the back of the cylinder is it OK if you lift the closer ones a little too?

Paper clip picks should not look like anything.... get some real picks (buy'em or make them as per one of the many guides tell you to) as paperclips, much like their name implies, are for cliping pieces of paper together.
