Raking and vibration picking

I saw alot of videos on youtube about raking master locks but after reading the MIT guide i believe that it is just vibration picking. anyone can clarify on this? thanks in advance

No its not, they are two totally differant methods,

Bumming is simular to vibration picking but raking most certainly isnt unless your doing it wrong (like a video shown on here recently),

but i do not see the person in the video moving the pick. instead he quickily extracts the pick and the lock opens. is it true that for raking the pick tends to move in and out quite alot?

That is called ripping,

To rip you insert the pick to the back of the lock and put some tension on,
Quickly pull out the tool to set the pins, this often has to be done a few times to achieve opening,

Rakeing,

To rake you put a little tension on the lock and insert the tool,
Simulary to ripping you pull the tool outwards but unlike ripping you stop before it comes out of the plug, instead you push it back in to the lock again at the same speed as you pulled it out,

Rakeing is done at approximatley one third the speed that ripping is done,

Vibration picking (im assumeing you mean with a epg) and bumping,

This relies on newtons law that every action has an opposite reatction,

In this instance a tool is repeatedly hit into the bottom of the pins by a slight amount,

This hitting makes the top pins of the lock bounce clear of the bottom pins and create a shear line thus opening the lock,

Rakeing and rapping are attempts at rapidly setting the pins but certainly in rakeing the object of the exorcise is to move the pins at varying amounts trying to catch them at the shearline, the procss is not meant to be used to bounce the pins up,

thanks for your reply, i have another question here =x

i am intending to pick up lock picking but here in singapore it is very hard to find commercial lock picks. my parents do not agree with buying a grinder, so any other recommendations on how to make picks? is manual filing the only way out? and any tips for manual filing?

newsparkling is in the SG.... they have "commercial lockpicks" and fairly cheap.... not the quality of some companies but they get the job done

Id buy a rough |) shaped file, a smaller less rough square file and a round one. The two last ones used for details while the first is for getting a basic shape of the pic. I use three kinds of paper for polishing- rough,medium and suuupa smooooth. Try creating just a simple set of picks- a rake, a diamon a hook and the tensions wrenches you need for the locks you own.

My best tip is to do _alot_ of picks and find what fits u best and maybe talk to your parents about it first so they understand why your doing what your doing

Also, being aware of the laws in your country is very good. For example, here in Sweden your not allowed to carry around picks in public.

heh thanks people. the best sand paper i managed to find was 600 grit and its for paint o.o will it work for picks?
