How To: Dragon Tension Wrench

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

If I do ever make that wrench I'm going to use the car battery charger approach like one of the users posted. I used it on some sheet metal I took from a microwave to make a box for a paintball mine I'm attempting to make And it worked beautifully. A bit messy seeing as the salty water turns a reddish brown but for cuts like that tool has it would be perfect.

Good luck to all users of this and would-be makers.

Horses for courses.......but i think it is the most cumbersome thing I have ever seen.

How many trading lockies use this?

I agree it appears cumbersome. It looks like the red headed stepchild of lockpicking tools. Isn't the fun of having any hobby all of the stuff you get to accumulate for it? All in one tools mean you have alot less stuff to play with.

None as this was never on a commercial market to purchase. And if others have made one they should have made a guide so we all could know what the exact gap distance would be.

I would fall over laughing if I seen a pro using this.

cumbersome? For normal locks try using a quarter as a tension wrench. Actually flat (regular) screwdrivers have worked better. For tubular locks? Well you could take a fork from your kitchen silverware drawer and bend the tongs and save yourself a bunch of time!!

This is not the most ideal tool in the industry. Steve Hampton already (indirectly) admitted that has he never had these mass produced.

I guess something else that motivated me to build Steve's dragon is the amount of frustration building up when I was trying to pick a tubular lock and having t-wrench problems; and all the while thinking "If I only had that dragon this would be a whole lot easier"!! Well now I know different and am not so aggravated when picking a tubular lock.

But now I have one, and used one, it will probably sit in the drawer with my bump keys.

Hello! I know no one has touched this post in about 10 years, but You talked about modifying it. I made something similar and thought I'd share. Feel free to scale it and try it. The angled tensioner is for bok and needs to be closer to 90° but it works.

I am a little lost on the protrusions in the middle of the handle. They almost look like they are meant to be used for tensioning. If that is true, are the multiple prongs getting in the way or impeding your access to the keyway, say if you are using the bottom middle length on the handle to tension the lock?

Also in terms of use, how are you supposed to hold it?

Maybe it would just be easier if someone could post a video of someone one using this thing the way it was intended.

Those middle prongs are for tensioning a tubular lock for picking by hand.

The middle prongs are for tubular tensioning. I thought about it getting in the way Which is why it's so large and is on the side it's on. I'll do a video on how it's to be held and post it tomorrow. I'll try to do the video in the morning so it should be mid-day or afternoon tomorrow. :)

I also need to mention mine is .045in and needs to be about .035in to work better.

Here is the video on the tool I made. Still looking for the right material to make the dragon tensioner and test it.
