Help me out here guys... my house lock is a simple Kwikset that i can get in 7 seconds on a bad day. However, i also keep losing the key to my shop, and i am tired of calling a locksmith. i cannot dissassemble it, since i don't have time. i just need to know how to pick it. here's the problem. It's one of these everest Schlages with sidebar technology, and all i have is a Southard standard set of five picks and tension wrench. please help.

Don't pick locks you rely on. If something goes wrong, and it breaks, you're really screwed. I'd listen to UWSDWF and get a couple extra keys, if the key isn't too thick you can keep a copy in your wallet. (if you carry one)

I wonder why these "omg help me i need to pick MY lock TODAY. i have no ACCESS to anything but the outside." are always the first posts by these random people....
makes me think they are less than honorable in their intentions...
hate to point the finger but... okay yea im pointing the finger.

first of all, i do have a spare key. but I KEEP LOSING IT. i've tried friends, i have done the wallet and the car key thing. i have hid it under a mat, in the gutter, behind the TV, i had a necklace, everything. but i lose my key. Second, i have a pick kit, and while it's a small one, i enjoy doing it. i want to learn for the sake of learning. especially if it's a hard one; it's more of a challenge. i just need to know the process, so i'm not wasting time doing it the wrong way. Why would a high security lock break? wouldn't the Kwikset have broken first? also i joined this site for lessons on how to pick locks, not life lessons on where to hide my next key. if you're not going to help me out on how to pick it, don't bother writing because this site is for locksmiths to give info and advice on how to PICK LOCKS, not info and advice on how not to lose a key. jeez, you're defeating the purpose of my even being here. maybe i'me wasting my time on this site because you guys won't teach me how to pick locks. thanks for my first experience. so far i've learned that people think i'm stupid and not worth teaching. and yes, it may be a bad first topic to start, but if that's the whole reason i'm on this site, then i don't need to ease into this topic in the next few years. and i don't need it done right away: that's impossible. it will take time, but i might never get a start because of mugwumps like you either don't know how to do it or are too lazy to write how. if it's the latter then send a link telling how. there's just nothing i've read on how to crack a sidebar lock, most just say it's hard. i've exercised all precautions. this was my last resort for fear of this very thing happening. thanks a lot

This site is here (IMHO) for people to learn and share experience. not to give lessons. all of the things you have asked have been answered many times before. The_Krug wrote: this site is for locksmiths to give info and advice on how to PICK LOCKS, not info and advice on how not to lose a key. jeez, you're defeating the purpose of my even being here. maybe i'me wasting my time on this site because you guys won't teach me how to pick locks.
Once again this is a hobby picking site. not just for locksmiths to teach. many of the newer members can help the really new members and the more experienced members can help the less experienced. The_Krug wrote:there's just nothing i've read on how to crack a sidebar lock, most just say it's hard.
Most sidebar locks will be considered advanced material and there for not for the open forums.
I am sorry you do not feel you have had a good experience with you first post. we (well most) are more than happy to help. but as a first post you yourself have admitted it may have not been the best topic. we get lots of first posts asking how to open a lock quickly and almost all are less than well intentioned.
all of the suggestions are valid, especially the one about keeping a key in you pick set.
All the best
John

The_Krug wrote:because this site is for locksmiths to give info and advice on how to PICK LOCKS,
where did you read this information? this isn't a walk up help desk to teach people how to pick locks. and most of us are not locksmiths we do this as a hobby because it's interesting and a challenge.
We come here to exchange information, not just ask a question on how to pick a specific lock and then run off. We cant just give any new user off the street an instructional manual.. someone new could be up to no good. this isn't a training ground for burglars. And your story about loosing a key to your shop seems a bit fishy. Doesn't sound like you're a very responsible shop owner. Do you loose customer invoices too?
If you really want to learn you gotta learn on a lock that isn't currently in use on your door. Buy an Everest on ebay, clamp it in a vise and sit there practicing. It's like any other Schlage, you just have an extra pin to set. It's all practice. You can't just learn how by having one of us send you detailed reply.
time and effort.
