just a Q on picking

Postby adamm » 3 Apr 2007 11:52

i was attempting to pick a lock of mine but i couldn't even get one pin set. i tried raking it a bit and just jiggling the pick around and then i tried to set each pin separately and when i released torque i didn't hear any of the pins click back.

another question. i saw someone say 93939 would be a hard lock to pick. what does this mean. is it the hight of each pin to where they need to be to where the fault line aligns correctly. and if it is, does that mean there are 9 different depths for each pin?

Click on my www button and have a read up then click my signiture picture and have a read up,

The code is the key biting code, 939393 means theres a 9 cut then a 3 cut then a 9 cut again etc,

A 9 cut is very low which means the pin will be very long and when set at the SHEAR LINE will still be very low in the keyway,

A 3 cut is quite a high cut on the key which means the piun will be short and sat high up in the keyway when its set at the SHEAR LINE,

It sounds like you are not putting enough tension on, you should put tension on unitl only one pin will stay up when you press it with the pick,

Your picking attempt: you might have some dirt in your lock that is causing one or more of the pins to stick in the chambers. If it is an older/used lock try taking it apart and cleaning it and put some graphite on it.

93939: This is referred to as MACS (Maximum Adjacent Cut Specification), I think) anyway it's basically designed to give you as little room as possible to maneuver your picks through the lock. the numbers refer to the depth of the cut on the key (9 being deepest 0 being shallowest) and corresponds to the pins in the lock, 9 being the longest pin and 0 being the shortest.

Also this MACS is for schlage locks and their knockoffs, if you're using a different type of lock this pinning specification may not be possible (ie since kwiksets have a max depth of 7).

8)

Dirt is a god tip though and also it could simply be that the locks are broken hence them being removed fromt he door,

A 939393 would be hard to pick because you've got to reach your pick up between the 3 long pins to reach the short pins.
