looking for a security pin source.

Postby a_kayaker » 6 Apr 2007 9:14

So, I am off work today and I am sitting here drinking my coffee and watching "How it's made" while perusing this forum.

I went out and purchased a Kwikset deadbolt and I have been searching around town for a source of security pins to repin it with.

All the lock shops I call act like i'm crazy and really don't know what to make of my request for security pins. I did not mention the fact that I pick, but it doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

Does anyone have a favorite source for pins? I guess I am limited to internet resources. I am getting the feeling that shops here in the US do not want to sell the pins outright. They would rather clip me for the cash to repin the lock themselves and they sure as hell don't want to be a source for lockpickers.

Schuyler:
On your link there are 2 deminisions given. Are those lengths or diameters of the pins and how does one know which to get. I have a Kwikset deadbolt also???

Also on this link I got from another thread, the cost is more for these spools and it says Kwikset #1 or #2. How do there designations correspond to the sizes in your link??

Comments please??

I was also amazed that locksmiths knew so little. I went into a locksmith here in town and asked him for some spool pins, he had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. At first I thought he was just playing dumb because he didn't want to sell them to me. He asked me to clarify and I said "spool pins... or mushrooms, serrated... any type of security pin". By the look on his face, you would have thought I asked him to troubleshoot a nuclear power plant problem. I asked if he re-pinned locks and he said "well yah, but we just put the same pins that come out".... sigh

Try this one, http://www.lockpicks.com/index.asp?Page ... ProdID=523. I bought this kit a few months ago before stepping up to real high security locks. Decent set, has both spool and serrated of many different sizes. I was happy with it.

I couldn't get a locals to sell me spool pins either, he was telling me that he wouldn't sell a security pin to a non-locksmith, but i'm guessing he probably just didn't have any.

Clk Supplies are alright, but the schlage spool pins at Clk arent shapped exactly like the "real" schlage spool pins you find in locks.

when i looked at the kit eyes_only posted that he had purchased i noticed that the serrated pins in my american padlock look very different from those in that kit. on the pins in the american the serrations are spread out across the pin not all at one end. are most serrated pins like the ones in the kit eyes_only bought or like that in my american padlock?

Well they obviously arent obtaining there products from any reputable lock company like schlage or american. Im suprised they are legally allowed to use the name schlage or american or etc if their products arent the same.
