How to make fancy pick handles

I know this is kind a old but does the PLASTI DIP gets off after a while or does it always give you a nice handle?

Can you rephrase the question? If you mean does it come off or wear off after a while I would say it depends on how well you prep the metal. If you scuff it to help the dip to have something to grab to, clean it really well and degrease it there will be no way to get it off easy. If you're asking if the dip gets less effective after time (while still in the container waiting to be used) I couldn't answer it since I never seal the cans well so I never get a chance to use it twice

Clean everything well before you apply it and the pick will break or wear out long before the coating peels off.

My older ones where I sanded everything nice and smooth are peeling, unfortunately.
Fortunately you get enogh dip for many, many picks, so you can always strip the whole thing off, or add a fresh layer on top of the peeling one.

Yeah, you want to scuff things rough that you want to coat with paint or stuff like this. It gives it something to bite into.

What about the pictures of the "spider web" fiber glass handles? are they done yet, and how did they work out? Just that you got me thinking about it now and it seems like a pretty sound idea.

I'm helping a friend make picks and he decided to skip the dip and just polish the aluminum up real nice. I must say the pick feels really nice. The aluminum is kind of soft so we're thinking some kind of clear coat to protect it.
We're also experimenting with anodizing the aluminum. We're using Coca-Cola, a stainless steel bolt and a 12V DC wall-wart power supply :-)

It doesn't seem to have worked terribly well, but I think there's a lot more reading we need to do.

As for the nice aluminium handles and what not why not do engravings??

And for the devel-satan we call icthey ictchey owwwe(fiber[death]glass) go down to the grocery and pay(insert price here) for a bottle of ur good 'ol CLOROX type bleach price, name, color, smell dont matter.
What you do IS 1. start hot water in tub 2. add bluub bluub bluub of you smelly friend into the fountain of ahhh(tub) 3. fill full of warm water 4. Enter, now you will feel all slimy and gross but it wont hurt you,hair,skin. will ruin nice clothes. should be Perfectomundo in the A.M. :shock:

PS stay in as long as you can,about as long as a normal bath.

Thanks for the link Chucklz. I've also been reading the DIY link from the wikipedia article on anodizing (http://astro.neutral.org/anodise.shtml). We certainly didn't do anything to clean the metal beforehand, and it looks like having steel, copper and aluminum in the tank at once might not help.
It looks like a solution much nastier than Coke is going to be needed too...this should be fun.

Yes MUCH MUCH nastier than coke. The conc. acid should only be handled by someone with sufficient safety gear on. One drop in your eye, and kiss your depth perception goodbye.

I would recommend not buying the 98% H2SO4 if you don't really know what you are doing. 10% is plenty fine (just adjust the dillutions for your bath) and a bit safer to handle.

If you plan to use conc. Nitric Acid to do cleaning before hand, its rather nasty stuff that will burn/turn yellow brown lots of things. Including you.

Oh, and just FYI, ordering any quantity of both concentrated acids may raise a flag that gets you a law enforcement/homeland security visit, as these acids can be used to manufacture things that go boom.

We're still in the planning stages here and I know I'm being very wary; if it looks like it's going to be too much of a hazard I won't be too put out. This is mainly for aesthetics.
Right now we're planning on using battery acid from a car battery for the dip and caustic soda to clean the parts before hand. One of the sites suggests having a solution of bicarbonate of soda on hand to neutralize any stray acid, but I'm not sure where to get that so it'll probably end up being baking soda. We're also going to have to track down some lead. I'm hoping the hardware store will have lead flashing for roofs.
For power: a computer PSU, which can deliver many more amps than the little wall wart we tried first. Upgrading the wires might be a good idea there.
