No, they are refering to "American Lock" It's a brand name.

We're talking about American brand locks, some of the more difficult padlocks that are sold on the mass market. Mine looks like the one on the right:

Spool pins are not as difficult as they are made out to be. Even simple locks such as schlage sc1 use spools. If you use light enough tension you will actually feel the plug rotate back slightly as the spool hangs on the shear line. A feather touch tension is helpful to beginners until you get the feel for torque.

Master lock company is in Milwaukee, or use to be, now they are probably in china. American lock company I believe is in illionis, though its a long time since ive read their literature. the american lock is more secure I would believe, the lock bodies can come in harden steel, or aluminum, and some of them have genuinely bolt cutter resistant shackles, the ones with the thick shackles, the others, seem to have shackles that will cut, this could be for those who want the lock to indicate when its been tampered with, but still cuttable if the owners lose the key.
