will my standard normal liquid laundry soap hurt my pin springs?? i.e. corrode, make sticky,basically not function properly when dipped in and dried totally?

It might turn a little chalky when it dries out completely. Why would you introduce laundry soap into a lock?

WELL....... have you ever lost a spring?? dumb question right? well I have! do u have laudry soap and a black light? Because I do, and if you mix em...ooohhhh scary glow in the darkness!!!!! I will try it and post my findings.

Kudos on the creativity. But I'm thinkin' this isn't going to be a good idea in the long run. The way I see it, there are only two possibilities:

A) The soap washes off/falls off entirely, leaving nothing to actually glow under black light.
B) The soap doesn't wash off and now you've got a bunch of crap on your springs that will get in the lock, clog things up, and make your locks fail.

If there's enough residue to actually light up under black light, there's enough residue to cause pins to stick and cause the lock to fail.

That's my 2c.

Well, it was actually not a bad thought.... his idea is that if his pins are covered in the soap, and the soap glows under black light, then when he loses a spring he can turn the lights out and fire up the black light.

Like I said, creative, but probably either not practical or not good for the locks.

Well another one of my GREAT ideas shot down. As I said I will try it and here is what I found.

1. you have to have so much soap on it to get it to glow it clogs all the threads.
2. I forgot(for the sake of creativity) that crap builds up in locks.

As for getting it off if you do use normal household soap,if it does not come off in hot water I'll buy you 1,000 more springs of your choice(I never said put it in the lock :wink:

)

Also this was geared toward people who repin the said spring containing locks frequently, as this is the #1 cause of spring loss!! That being said you would have many chances to clean/redo dippings while you repin.

Spy shops usually sells UV pens that has ink which glows under UV light. I don't know how permanent the ink is but that might be a good alternative.

The soap would remove any petroleum based (and many other) lubricants. tis a bad idea to use soap. However try a highliter or other UV reactive marker

Schuyler and Shrub, if things get bad for ya let us know, I'm sure we can get up a collection and send you some extra springs. We just can't have 2 of our most respected members running around the house with a spring grasped firmly in tweezers yelling "here kitty kitty" :lol:
