Can we please steer away from discussion on how to cenceal picks from the authorities,

If you want your picks abroad with you get the sent over airmail to meet you when you get there then send them back when you leave,

I belive a lot of people simply put them in the luggage and have little problem with it,

well, i will adhere to shrubs request as best i can, and at the same time, may i share my own findings? good.

using the flat tension wrench and the bottom pick ( the sorta F shaped one ) i can actually keep those in my wallet. both tools are actually only like 2.5 inches long. so i slide them into my wallet where a credit card would go. and then i push them down all the way. its a perfect emergency set. simple. yet everything you might need in a lockout. half diamond serves for spp or raking, and the tension wrench fits every standard type pin tumbler ive played with.

frankly, if anyone is concerned about having to open a lock while out and about, or just want to carry something for emergencies, i would suggest making something like this. it has served me well since i made them.

if anyone is super interested, i can trace and scan them for you or something, though im too lazy right now to get up and turn on my scanner, blah blah blah. pm if you're super interested. i guess.

as for legality, we have a thread with FULL legal laws, etc and all that BS for i think every state and nearly all countries.
edit: after close examination, i have discovered that louisiana is one of the few not covered. my bad.

hmm, well. you can be the first to submit La laws i guess.

i guess ultimately though, if a cop pulls you over, hes not going to search all of your credit card slots for contraband. i hope. only problem would be airports, etc as metal detectors might find them. though i dont suggest sneaking things through security of any kind.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize my comments would be read that way. Come to think of it, discussing TSA regulations gets close to politics, so I'll drop that as well.

CVScam wrote:I have successfully taken a basic lockpick set into my local courthouse, emergency room, and this afternoon I went into the downtown federal building. I just put my picks into the plastic bin and each time the security guards/police at the metal detector checkpoint just asked me what was in the leather case I said my lockpicks. I just explained I use them at the car lot where I work. The funny part is I had to check a pocket knife at the courthouse but they let me keep my picks.

I think the reason you got away with it, even though it could of been illegal, is that most authorities arent sure on the laws about carrying lockpicks. Its not exactly an every day occurence. And even so you werent using them to break and enter. Most burglaries are the result of a window being smashed or a screwdriver in a door, so authorities arent really looking at lock picks. Just my take.

Just check your picks, and locks, if you can. I've taken my picks on carry-on with no problems a couple of times, but locks are a HUGE issue. Every time I go through security with a bunch of locks I get pulled off to the side, bag opened, questions asked, etc. etc.

You have to understand that on a thread that nessacary doesnt hold any interest for me i still have to read it to look for site rule breeches, on threads i have little to comment on it may be a quick skip through and then make a comment if somthing looked out of place,

I saw airports and getting picks throuhg them and thught i would nip it in the bud,

I think all pickers carry somthing hidden away in their wallet or somthing 'just incase' it never happens but it gives a sense of security thinking your ok if anything should happen,

The last thing i would want is someone to be searching how to smuyggle illegal items through customs and this site coming up and us getting into trouble,

I have to admit i like the james bond school of thought,

Take 3 bits of somthing to make one thing, in this case a pen pocket clasp could be a tension wrench in disguise, perhaps somthing from your watch as a rake etc you get the idea,

An electric pick made by attaching a pen top to a razor, now thats top secret lol

The brass handle is generally regarded as not very useful, and the zippered cases... I have one, its nice, but I don't think I've ever opened it or used the picks inside. (I won it, and I dont generally use SO picks.) I would suggest getting the 14 piece SO set or the "Novice" HPC set. Then after a few months of picking, figure out what tools work best for you and then make some to your specifications.
