HPC may only sell to locksmiths but there are tons of distributors of locksmith tools and supplies out there that will sell to just about anyone.

Yep, exactly what Eyes_only said. (third time today). Go for a third party distributor and they should be able to sell you some.

I fully support them,

Selling bypass tools and lock opening devices should be limited to the associations that have a reason to use them and not crinimals who want to steal things,

The grey area is that lockpicking as a hobby is still unrecconised but tolerated,

You will find even though most say they will not sell to the public most infact will but if they dont an agent for them will,

I have mixed emotions about the situation.

As a professional locksmith, I agree with the thought that mfg's and distributors should only sell to locksmiths. This is how it used to be. This school of thought keeps the professional tools out of unprofessional hands. There would be no reason to lock your doors at night if everyone could buy a lock pick set at Wal-Mart. It also keeps some of the specialty tools and parts out of our customers hands. If they can not get the tools or parts, they must call us for service...a captive audience if you will.

However, from the mfg's and distributors point of view, they got in this business for the same reason everyone does...to make money. If they can make more money by selling to anyone that crosses their threshold, then they will in turn make more money.

From the curious seekers point of view, then yes I would probably have made my own set of picks by now and trying to find professional grade tools where ever I could.

The US laws have a section just for lockpicks. Big Brother has ruled and made their decision that it is illegal to ship or mail lockpicks to anyone that is not a bona-fide locksmith. Who is to say someone is really a bona-fide locksmith though? I am a first generation locksmith in my family and started my business from scratch. So how did I get my lock picks and equipment? I cheated the system :)

I don't think the Government even fully enforces the laws saying you can't ship pick tools through USPS or whatever. Lockpicks.com regularly sends me the stuff I ordered from them through USPS. Peterson did the same thing too when I ordered the pry bar tension wrench from them. :?

It's a great tension wrench. It's strong and provides excellent feed back from the lock even when you apply only light tension. Made picking some of my favorite high security locks much easier. Unfortunately it is a bit too wide for the Schlage Primus. But other than that one setback I highly recommend this tool for anyone. Peterson did a great job on it.
