Practice Lock help, modified pins

So i recently tried to create a practice lock from a Brinks deadbolt i picked up from wal-mart. I got it apart no problem... well little problem
Well once i got it apart i saw that the some of the pins were modified, the ones that look like a capital i (I). Well i think this is hampering my learning curve a little bit, cause those things are a little complicated to get to lift when you are first starting out. So i don't know what to do... should i just put a different pin in its place? If i do that the key won't work right? and then if i can't get it picked i am pretty much screwed. Just wondering if you guys have any advice or if maybe i should just get another lock to work with... if that is the case any brands that you guys know that don't have modified pins? Those are spool pins, designed to make the lock harder to pick. It's possible to replace them with regular pins, but you should start with an easier lock. Kwikset is often recommended; I've done well with one of their locks.

or if its only got 2 spools get ur self another one of the same locks. pin it up with regular driver pins and keep practicing till u can do it with all spools.

yeah trying to buy as little as possible... any tips on those spools. Right now using a smaller amount of torque on my home made tools seems to be working a lot of the time, not always though, may have something to do with the low quality of my tools, a hair pin feeler pick and a paper clip torque wrench, i have a few tools in the mail, i got a s rake a feeler pick and a small torque wrnech, i hope that helps... to if i just don't use the spool pins the only thing it really hurts is that my key won't work, which means i will HAVE to pick it to change the pins... right?

It does´nt matter what kind of top pins you use, as far as the key goes!

It looks like you´ve already disassembled the lock, then start with just one pin, or should I say DB´s exercise!

Do you have access to regular top pins?

Also, I recommend that you do NOT try to learn LP with hairpins and paperclips, use you feeler pick!

thanks for the info wrench and charo and jack. just what i was looking for wrench i am still using the FUBAR tools cause my replacements are still in the mail, gonna be here soon i hope. Thanks for the info on the top pins, i shoulda figured that one out myself only have those 5 pins that came with mu original deadbolt, si i have 3 unmodifired pins and 2 spoolpins, hopefully by the time i get the 3 pins down i can start working in the spoolpins, probably not the best practice, but iwth limited means the best i can do ya know? Great help from all so far. Any good tips for those modified pins, typical practices for dealing with them, i assume there are pretty much SOP now?

If you wish to learn to pick wait for your tool's it is so much easier with them.As for your lock dont put the spool pin's in your lock{or driver's and spring's} just load up the other chamber's when more confident add the spool's.
