new padlock - how good?

Postby Noah » 16 Apr 2007 17:45

Hi.. I'm not a newbie to locks, but I bought a type of padlock today I don't have any experience with. I'm not looking for picking instructions, but I'm curious as to how it compares with other types of standard padlocks (pin tumblers, wafers, etc.) as far as pick resistance.

Thanks!

It's a disc-style lock. I would venture to say that you will not be able to open that non-destructively within your first year picking.

What you need to get your hands on is either a normal pin tumbler lock, or a lever lock.

lol! the first time i read the post i just glanced at the name and automatically thought of n2oah, not realizing it was a different person! actually, you should probably ask him, he knows a lot about disc locks such as abloy, ect. As for that lock, it is considered advanced material, and as Schuyler said, get a cheap pin tumbler, lever, or wafer lock, depending on where you live
It's ok guys, i have a really bad attention sp-wow look, a beach!

As stated, that mechanism has very high pick resistance. As far as over-all security goes you want a double ball locking mechanism so the lock cannot be shimmed opened. Just looking at the lock I suspect that it has one, but you should check the cutouts in the shackle. If they're arcs you're in good shape; if they're triangular notches then the lock can be bypassed.

Actually with the right tools, that lock will likely pick very easily due to poor tolerances and total lack of or very few false gates on the discs.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

zeek knows

looks like Zeek knows the particular brand, does it tension on first disc? or last? if first disc, making a pick should be easy, but if on only the last disc, you gotta put a lot of tools down that keyway.

Picking is NOT for discussion but the OP knows this and only asked for how good the lock is,

The lock for picking practice is good if you havent done one before and are making tools,

The lock is very very good and impossable right now if you havent picked a lock, made your own tols before and dont know how they work,

The lock depending on quality is either crap or great for security, if it is a cheapo cheap thing from planet cheap then its no good for locking your motor bike up but if its expensive and well made (its not a expensive one) then it will be a good padlock to use,
