Considering getting a Southord PXS 14

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Considering getting a Southord PXS 14

Postby xboxteen01 » 20 Apr 2007 16:32

im thinking of buying the SouthOrd PXS 14 set. is this a worthwhile purchase?
at present im using home brew hacksaw picks and the Southord 5 piece set. also ive heard that members of this forum get a discount or something when buying tools from lockpickshop.com. how does that work?

To get the lockpickshop discount, enter the coupon code lp101
Why get more of the same SO picks? If you like the SO picks, why not just get the individual picks, and not the whole set. Personally, I would save up and get one of the cheaper Peterson sets. Well, I think they only have one inexpensive one these days :grumble:

get the 14 piece set, then move up to the Peterson later on if you stick with it.

OP already has the SO 5 piece set. I don't see much upgrade to the 14piece set, do you?

If I were you I would wait till you can be sure that you don't cause your SO picks to bend anymore during regular use if that is your current situation before you get the Peterson picks. I beat the crap out of my spring steel Majestic picks before I learned how to properly use my picks and more importantly the tension wrench. Peterson picks arn't that expensive individually but they are such nice picks that it would be a shame if they get bent out of shape. Some people even say they prefer Petersons over the Falle Safe pick set.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Personally, I'd go for something larger, if you can afford it.

When I upgraded, I jumped form my 5 piece to the SO 69 piece and gave my 5 piece to a good home (my younger sister, who was interested in it).

Hope this helps...

I have both and prefer the 14

Postby DarinR » 27 Apr 2007 22:28

Hi xboxteen01,

I have both sets and the PXS 14 kit has the welded sandwich handles which make the handles 3 times thicker than the 1 piece handles on the 5 piece Southord set. I find these significantly more comfortable to use for extended periods.

Thanks,
Darin

I started out with the 17 piece Southord set a while back. Like others mentioned, you won't use all of them but in my opinion, the nice brass pick handle is worth the cost of the kit all by itself. When I want a few more picks, I just buy them individually and use the handle that came with my 17 piece. Very comfortable....
