Having read Mick's book I can confirm that it is an excellent reference for anyone in locksmithing today.
And to make a judgement on something - (By your own admission Shrub) that you don't have time to read is very wrong.
I personally have found Mick to be a very helpful approachable person and like others have stated Lets show some respect to someone who has been in the business for so long and achieved so much in that time.

Ok so lets be clear about this one guy has been in the industry years, written whole syllabus's which people entering the trade are tested on and the other is blatantly disrespectful and makes out he copies other work and you call this witch hunt ?
When are you non uk guys going to realise knowing the parts of a key are the very things that make someone a locksmith and not someone who doesnt know the very basic terminology but thinks its ok to slag off an industry authority ?
BTW for those that dont know mick is one of the guys who wrote the master locksmiths associations entry exam, far from a witch hunt or flogging a dead horse. This is about respect, mick has been in this trade for years and not some wannabe on a forum, he has been there, done it and written a book too.

Sure put shrub on a pedastal but lets not forget in this country (uk) nobody in the trade knows him as a trading locksmith. If hes trading just put his details up on the site or has he something to hide ?

Why, not even Shrub can be right all the time. Why should he or anyone else have to prove he is a trading locksmith. This is a hobby site and his advice is normally sound I dont understand this non uk bit what differance does where you come from make. And he did admit he never read the book and did not mean to imply a rip off.

I posted what I posted not to put anyone on a pedestal but the fact that people were posting the same criticism over and over again with no more to add but the same sentiments. I've done the same when people are ganging up on a nOOb, once the initial "you did/said this wrong it is not nessicary for the next person to come along and regurgitate the same thing. It isn't productive and is simply bandwagon mentality being played over and over again.
Have something constructive to say then say it, don't just beat a dead horse for the sake of beating a dead horse.

Mick Friend is the last person that would copy another's work and claim it as his own, he deserves more respect.

The UK wrote:...We are talking about a guy who has been in this trade for years and deserves a little respect surely...

Ok, we've determined here that Mick Friend deserves respect. He wrote an encyclopedia and thats something I wouldn't do so he's got my respect.
It also appears that the statement that offended everyone was retracted, and not meant to be insulting it was just poorly worded. So....... How about them bulleted locks or shall we continue saying the word respect ?

Here I'll get it out of the way.....

Now get off it. If you have something to ADD and NOT REPEAT then ADD it otherwise the redundency is POINTLESS and nothing more then....

Perhaps people within the industry feel strongly about such comments, which can be damaging and do not make the industry look good. When people feel strongly they are obliged to comment. This thread could have been stopped in it's tracks by way of an apology.

bullets

Postby greyman » 22 Apr 2007 5:58

Re the original poster's question. I think bullet is the correct terminology for a "female" ward on a key, whereas the matching wards in the keyway of the lock are "male". As far as lever locks go, most warded key lever locks are low security, although Chubb has a couple of variations with left and right offsets on the key bit, I believe.

The French have many words for different wards, etc. Have a look at some of the antique lock books covering the old warded key locks that were around for centuries, you will be surprised by the detailed terminology!

You miss the point if shrub had bothered to read micks book he would know what a bullet on a key is. Also how on earth can you say something is poor value without ever reading it ? At no point has even bothered to apologise about saying its poor value and this from someone who hasnt the time to read it.
No statement was retracted only something about it was word wrongly.
Mick has done far more than just write a book UWSDWF.

Earlier in the post shrub himself said no one challenges him yet when someone does you get stupid posts like your own put up. Have you actually got anything constructive to say ?

Evidently not... it seems neither do you though.

I think my point was lost... it has nothing to do with the person, it has to do with the content. To have aprox 7 posts with nothing in them but people regurgitating the same, non-constructive, thing over and over again is pointless.

Do I claim the Shrub is perfect? No. Though his offensive statement was retracted and apparently that was good enough for Mick ("however I accept your later retraction").

Do I claim that Mick is something he is not? No, I have no idea of him or his book except what I saw on his website, looks like an excellent encyclopedia, again not something I could do and I respect him for that.

I think what, beyond the dead horse business, is bothering me in this thread is that it is yet again a giant sum up of fucktarded Brit lockie politics, which has many places that it could/should be aired none of which is here.

So does anyone have anything to contribute to this thread along the lines of let's say.... the OP's question?
