Homemades........ Rust prevention?

hey, i have a question for a change lol. how does everyone prevent their homemade picks from rusting?!

i dont know much about metallurgy (is that the word?) or metal work in general, so i didnt ever really know you needed to use anything, but i have noticed my homemades always start to rust like crazy after a week or so. and they get all nasty and grimy.

any pointers? oh, and im doing everything with a dremel and no heat (as in no torch, etc etc)

I usually blast anything I make out of metal with PB Blast and then scrub it down with scotch brite to get any rust off.

hmm this is the best i can do i cant figure out how to link pics. Do u code 'em? Any how Krypos when you use a dremal (dumb question) do you quench? When metal is over heated it changes it structure and makes it more succeptable to rust. (Question more for people who didn't know :roll:

)

fingerprints contain salt, keep your picks dry and clean, wipe them after using them. if a little rust starts, give it a fine grit sanding. and if you have a case that won't bleed oil, such as a metal box, put a small bit of cloth in there with just a drop of three in one oil on it.

I would like to try galvanising some of my steel picks, that should completly stop rust (except from extreme salts i.e Ocean water). The only trouble with this is I dont know if everyone can get Zinc plates (Does ANYONE know where to get them offline?) Other than the zinc you also need a plating solution so anyone interested should do some googlin.

Try the marine section from your local hardware store. They sell different type of zinc bars and pieces to be attached to a boat as to prevent boats corrosion. Doesn't cost a thing

I find the best way to keep picks from rusting, is use 'em 12 out of every 24 hours :wink:

one problem. gun blue doesn't work well (for stainless picks) and it'll wear off so i suggest polish the s**t out of the picks and then give em some sort of spray-on clearcoat. They may need to be re-coated once in a while but its not complicated or expensive either. On the other hand if your picks aren't stainless then go for it.

If they SELL them how does it "not cost a thing"? I'd rather not go to jail for lockpicks (no matter what the charge is :lol:
