shim and my bastard of a lock

Postby illuzion » 25 Apr 2007 14:05

i made about 6 shims already and hav managed to open my lock once, when i intert it down the side of the lock, the spring loaded piece of metal the holds the lock closed it reaaly tight, like the spring is pushing it in the groove really hard, an the shim crumples everytime i try to instert it there, any tips?
cheers

Bah, stupid obscenity filter. 'Dog' is better than 'chienne' (do a french to english translation if you don't know what it means).

Is the shackle spring-loaded (i.e. pops open as soon as you unlock it)? If it is, it could be binding against the locking bar; pushing down on the shackle as you shim it may help.

Note: I've never tried to shim a lock, so this is a bit of a blind guess. Go ahead and correct me if I'm talking out of my arse.
This is the internet:
You don't have to capitalize, you don't have to use punctuation, and you don't have to spell correctly. And you will not communicate effectively.

As well as pushing on shackle try turning shim right and left as sometimes it jam's on one side yet glide's in the other.I tried making shim's but only had success on cheap lock's ,commercial shim's work great but not half the fun of picking. :)

locks

Postby raimundo » 26 Apr 2007 9:38

locks are made to withstand some abuse externally, so if you broke it throwing it at a wall, its probably not much of a lock, there are two methods of shimming, one is to push the shim down directly over the locking dog, against the cam angle, the other is to insert it deep in the area where nothing opposes it and then rotate it around the shackle to push back the locking dog. youll likely cut holes in your fingers if you are not careful, the push straight down method needs stiffer material to work, many locks have a tight shackle hole and there is not enough room to push a shim in and because of the fit of the shackle, often one or the other of these method will not work if there is no room on the area where the shim could go in.
