Picking Problem

Postby Houdini Locksmiths » 21 May 2004 11:54

I've attached a couple pictures of a key that opens a steering wheel lock.

Could anyone tell me if there is a tool/ pick soley designed to open this type of lock.

The key looks like a Phillips screw driver.

Thanks

Harry

yes there is a tool made specifically for those types of locks. you should be able to see one in action i believe on one of the h2k videos. Here is a link that should still have them hosted.http://connectmedia.waag.org/toool/h2k-lockpicking.wmv

Wow - They actually still make lcoks using those types of keys? I have one from back in the 50s/60s.

HPC make a pick - the cross pick I belive its called. I THINK its for these types of locks.

The one I have is basucally a pin tumbler lock with four axes, each only has two pins.

This is the tool I'm talking about:

Never tried it so can't be sure whether it's the correct tool though.

mbell that is the tool. I do believe some of these tools are capable having 2 picks removed for working with double sided locks. It would be a simple tool to make though.

mbell, some of these locks have more than 2 pins per axis. Ive seen one that I could swear was 5 pins per axis.

Thank you all for the advice, zeke79 you said it would be easy to make. Do you have an example of a home made model? or where to find instructions on making one.

Thanks

Chucklz: That's quite possible.

The single lock of this type I have is a mortice lock (slightly different to the one 'Houdini Locksmiths' has) and similar to UK lever mortice locks, it must be operated from both sides of the lock so the bitting must be the same and the number of pins are limited to the physical size of the case.

I have not made one but it does appear that it would be very possible using hacksaw blades for the making the picks, a piece of steel tubing of appropriate size for the tension tool and guide for the picks. I would need to have a lock in front of me to give you any dimensions.

Cross Locks and the possibility to make a tool were already discussed in the following post:
http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=1688&highlight=

Have a look here for some measurements:
http://www.locksmith-tools-supply.com/products/products_main214.htm

But you dont really need the tool, cross locks are pickable in the traditional way. Note that you have to pick every 90 degrees (even with the tool).

looks like a cross lock, you can use regular tension wrench and half dimand, hook or snake to rake each side...it's not so hard to open it.

try to use search 'cross lock'

The key is used in a kind of lock called a "Cross Lock". Here is a description of the pick, sold by this company:
