Hi, I downloading the jpeg template for the bogota rake from Exodus5000 who posted it at: http://img452.imageshack.us/img452/5105 ... atesb2.jpg.
The thread about the bogota template is at: viewtopic.php?t=15966&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=bogota+template&start=15.
The user Exodus5000 who posted it said the image resolution was 500 pixels/inch. He also said the pick itself (the area in black) should measure against a ruler:
Length: 3.50 inches.
Height: 0.15 inches .
The problem is in photoshop when I open the image with a 500 pixels/inch resolution, the image has length of 2.06 inches and a height of 0.124 inches. If I try to resize the image and keep the aspect ratio I can't get the length to equal 3.50 inches and the height to equal 0.15. This is because the ratio between the image's current height and the desired height doesn't equal the ratio between the image's current length and the desired length. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

I'm a bit confused by it myself. Exodus says the pick should measure 3.5 by 0.15 inches or 8.8 by 0.4 centimeters; those aspect ratios are 23.33 and 22.00 respectively. Measuring the image of the pick itself gives 1309 by 38 pixels, a ratio of 22.55 . The discrepancies could come from rounding off the dimensions, though they're rather large for a rounding error.
I can't see anything you're doing wrong. Some guidance or more precise measurements from Exodus would be appreciated.

Here is a PDF I just made outlining how to take a picture of templates and resize them to print properly. I did it very hurriedly and if some information is missing or incorrect, please let me know.

Personally I don't get it why people edits their images to print as a certain width. It is just easier to give picture and either mark it on the picture (ruler, tape measure) or tell otherwise that the picture is for example 12cm on the long edge. Then people don't have to come asking what size the picture needs to be. Just open it with an IrfanView or something alike and select in the printing dialog the width as the picture tells you. Prints always correct sized

nice tip Jaakko.
What I do however in paint shop pro I load up the image full sized and shrink it by percentages. then use a ruler to gauge the scale.
No need in trying all that technical stuff by loading it in a different resolution and then trying it that way.

I agree. I didn't think it would be that much hassle with those templates, and I'm pretty sure the resolution of my templates changed when I hosted them (hence the sizing problems.) From here on out - all of my templates will have a bloody ruler in them.

Here - I put a ruler in the template for you guys. Remember the handle isn't the right length - just the head, so make your handles longer so you can bend them like Ray does.

One final note, Charodei was asking about problems with the ratio. The ratio should be right, if you use the image I just hosted with the ruler, you'll find that the width is 3.5 inches, and the height should come to just about 5/32 of an inch. Which equates to around 0.156 inches.
Let me know if you guys have any problems with the new template.

You guys are putting in WAY too much effort here. The width of the pick blade is determined by the width of the sweeper bristle you use to make the pick. The radius of the curved portion of the picks depends on the diameter of the chain saw sharpening file you use. Oh, and having bogotas of a few different sizes is very handy.

Not all templates are the bogotas, though. I like being able to resize an image so it will print to the exact size so that I can accurately reproduce the item. This was useful for me when I made some of those Comp-1 computer generated picks.

The real trick is how the spacing between pins in the lock relates to the spacing between peaks. Unfortunately I'm too lazy to search for the right proportion now, but iirc it was 1 : 1.5. With a chainsaw file and common locks it seems to work out pretty much automatically, but as Chucklz said, having a few different spacings is nice and I've found that tiny differences here can have a big effect.
If you're unsure, I say err on the side of a wider spacing.

I just do it like chucklz says, they don't all come out alike. but near enough. Some times two very similiar picks will have different outcomes on a particular lock, don't ask me to over intellectualize on why this is.

I don't understand is this to scale?? If so what program are you using to print? When I print it is really large.
