Handcuff legality question

hey, is it illegal in the united states to own handcuffs and/or keys to such?

just wondering since i bought a pair today.

and i mean illegal to own if you are just civilian...... not LEO or military or whatever else. just 18 year old person living in apartment.

any takers?

I am not aware of your local laws but I would assume that, like in Canada, security guards whom carry cuffs are civilian and not a sworn LEO... there by I would deduct that... ect...

No, its legal, but police will be suspicious if you are found to have them in a bag with duct tape and weapons, in a car, you gonna have some 'splainin' to do. However if they are trimed with pink fur, you may have less to explain in some jurisdictions, like newyorkcity

Almost all gun, knife and military surplus stores carry and sell handcuffs and handcuff keys so it should not be illegal. When I was in high school the local military surplus store refused to sell me handcuffs because i was a minor at the time but they said they had no problems selling me the keys. Just don't carry them with you on your key ring with your house keys.

I do. I also have a tactical one in my shirt pocket when working. I use cuff keys for opening beer quite often and the dbl lock pin is great for resetting electronics

yeah, it's longer and easier to handle, especially while wearing search gloves

why not? I have cuff keys on my home and work keychains.. I almost took my cuffs last night when I went to the bars.. its a good item to have when restraining a drunkard who wants to have a go when he's looking for a fight and picks you. I left them at home though.. didnt want the bulky leather Safariland cuff case hanging off my belt all evening.

I think of carrying a cuff key just like I carry a mag light, leatherman tool, and a sharpie marker. essential every day carry item.

Though for the general public TAKE A COURSE before you carry or try to use 'em you become very liable without a certificate

In Winnipeg, you must be licensed to carry hand cuffs. You may own them, but carrying them in public is a no-no without proper licensing. Security guards that carry them must obtain certification, and those that do not have it, do not carry them.

whew............... i was a little worried when i posted this, as i thought for a second that they were illegal to own. my mother would not have been pleased to hear that.........

i do not intend to carry them outside the house....... last thing i need is to get in trouble for that.

maybe ill ask the school police officer in a prepurchase tone. like: i have always wanted to buy actual cuffs, but someone told me its illegal, is that true?

my school cop will fall for that. im sure. lol

In my experience it is usually a mistake asking cops about the law. They often know very little about the law and have little problem bending the truth to suit what they think should be the law. I mean, go ahead and ask your school police officer what he thinks but take it with a grain of salt.

Most states have internet law references now. I would go straight to the source.
