Master 140/140d (140d is the long shackle with the plastic case on it)

4pin with spools

The binding order does not always (Or usually) Start at the front OR back and work forward or backwards. the binding order is random.

Spool pins will be a Sod to pick with a paper clip if you don't know what your doing. but the master 140 is a nice easy lock if u have some real picks.

All the best
John

PS please search in future this exact question gets asked most weeks

Sorry  yeh its the 140, so I can lift any pins in any order, do I need to shove something in the keyway to hold the first pin up? or should I just lift it up so it locks in place

No u have to lift them in the binding order. this order can be random (as in you will have no idea what it is in most cases)

www.locksport.com read the guide on there and google "the MIT guide to lock picking"

I have a similar lock made by Craftsman and used to have a 140 in the past. It's a simple looking lock but everytime I attempt to pick a new one I always have trouble with it initially. I've had success with it by placing the tension wrench at the top of the keyway rather than the bottom. Because of the way it is shaped, placing the wrench at the bottom can seriously hinder picking attempts at times.

You say you are using a paperclip to pick the lock but do you have a Tension wrench? I f you dont make a improvised one with a hair pin. Maybe it is because you dont have the tension wrench to put tension while with your paperclip you are pushing up the pins to the shear line.

Paper clips are just not strong enough to be able to push up on the pins without deforming while the plug is under tension. It's one of the worst possible materials to make picks out of.

Start with a m1 keyway on a cheaper master and work your way up

if there are 4 pins, and you dont know the binding order, pick from back to front 4 times and it pops open!

You are right but may I say more precise: You know the binding order by finding the binding pin and setting that and continuing the search of a binding pin :)

...hmm...sounds like a movie, "The Search of The Binding Pin" :D

Well that works until you have to deal with security pins...
