What should I buy?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

What should I buy?

Postby Shiftyeyez » 3 May 2007 17:09

I have just begun to attempt to pick locks, and have found I am unsuccesful with paper clips and such. Due to my parents dislike in the new hobby I have come to enjoy, it is to big a challange to make home made pics. I have been looking around was wondering if other people had any suggestions of what I should buy and from where?(20-60) Dollar range.

Im gonna have to go with don't if your living at home and your parents don't want you doing it. Still its up to you. 14pc set if your in the states/canada or a slimline set if your in europe, 15pc.

All the best

I recommend ordering individual lockpicks and construct your own set rather than buying a complete set. What you need most are a large selection of hook picks. Then maybe a couple of rakes and one diamond pick. These are the ones most of us use majority of the time.

Here are few of my suggestions,

If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Personally, I started with an basic kit from SouthOrd (One like this: http://www.lockpickshop.com/MPXS-08.html). It's about $30, and has all the basics you need to start. Just be careful of the parents.

Also , I'd check your state's laws about owning and carrying lock picks. There are some states were you can get a rap sheet just for owning picks...

Id say buy a grinder. Buy some kind of grinder an learn to do your own picks. Its cheap and its much more fun. The tools are 20% of the fun. Making them yourself makes them 40 % imho :)

I think, although I would like to, making my own picks is out of the question. If I have lock picks and my parents find out they wont be furious, they just wont be thrilled. If I ease them into my new hobby they will come to accept it. Exact same thing I did with my pellet gun. If all the sudden I have bought a grinder my dad would be like"ahh....no". So maybe after a couple months I could start making my own.

honestly, i think you should buy a 62 piece set, and then send it to me, and i will tell you which picks to use after i have extensively tested them myself.

then you will know exactly which picks will suit your style.

this is meant as a joke (unless you would.......)

but there are a ton of threads on this EXACT subject. in fact, i think there is a sticky somewhere in new users start here that tells you all this. and then there is a sticky somewhere that tells you not to ask these types of questions.

so my advice is to SEARCH. there are 2 search buttons on every page, and sometimes more, depending on who has posted in said thread.

best of luck.

Why don't we just institute a hard and fast answer to this frequent question, make the guy at southord buy a bunch of supporter t shirts, and then tell every newbie that he has to buy the 14 pc set before he can ask any questions.

Just as a heads up, in addition to finding out about model and price, I'd also check the laws in your area about picks and carrying them. There's a good thread that covers laws state by state here: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=2850. Legality issues are as much a concern as parental issues, IMO. I'm not trying to discourage you, but it's just a little risky to be carrying your picks if they're illegal where you are. Especially if you call the parents to bail you out... :(

I just want to make sure that you don't end up on the wrong end of a criminal carge or a parental "talking to". :)

If ya can't

If you say you cant make picks, dont try, you have a self imposed limitation and you could hurt yourself. especially if you use power tools withou t safty glasses.
