Can anyone recommend a key machine for cuting keys by code?
Are there any good reference books for code cutting?

, I know I sound like I'm whiping a dead horse but I have never had a problem with any of the HPC products.
Go to their website, www.hpcworld.com and check out their gear. After that, find a lock locksmith supplier and ask them to bring in what you want.

Okay, I'll give an honest reply (before I read whatever silliness lurks behind the BMW code post). It really depends on what type of key you need to cut and what else you want to do with the machine. Ilco, HPC, Rytan, Schlage, Framon, Curtis, A-1, Foley-Belsaw, and ProLock all make code cutting machines and this is not a complete list by any means.
As for reference material, HPC still makes the best (IMHO) code books around. There are several companies who make code software. HPC, Framon, Blackhawk, and The National Locksmith are the first few who leap to mind.

I use an ITL 950 (the new model is called the 950C) and they run about $2500 U.S. or so. (I think) Excellent machine, very durable, dual voltage, and will cut Medeco and Primus no problem. Do invest in the higher quality carbide cutter though. If you get compatible software you can plug your laptop right into the unit and download the code. Very nice feature. 
If you want higher end, the Codeshark has it all built into one. 'Course, I believe you pay about 4 times as much. *insert witty comment here*
