Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Mul-T-Lock C1 pop 8 padlock, has a bad day.

Postby Phatphish » 4 May 2007 20:18

Ok here goes,

I have cleared this post with a mod, due to it containing a high security lock.
I cannot however give a description of how to pick this lock, its just going to be a few pics. And alot of meandering text.

Around a year ago a friend of mine who happens to be a Mul-T-Lock rep, gave me a few free samples from his demo box.
One of these was a MTL pop 8 padlock, C1 series.
It has sat on my desk, laughing at me for months, until today that is.
Ive only had the MTL picks for a couple of weeks and hadnt really had time to play much.
I picked up the lock and started probing around, this was about 17.10pm today. I noticed some movement in the cylinder and was so amazed that I had any kind of result, decided to take a picture.
Stage one complete.

This first picture was taken at 17.17pm.

Image

Decided to get a close up shot, just to see if my phone cam was upto the job.

Image

I was learning all the way at this point, and using some SO picks as probes, I was able to see/feel what the lock looked like inside.
Also, I had studied the quite generous keyway through a small magnifier which also helped learn alot about the lock.

Back to the MTL picks and much gnashing of teeth.

Then something surprising happened, the cylinder moved another few degrees and came to an abrupt stop.
Stage two was complete.

The last bit was a bit tricky, but I knew I was nearly there and persevered until...

At 17.57pm the lock gave its last dying breath.

Image

And fell to the desk, as I fell off the chair.

Image

Yup, its true, it really is open, I still cant believe it.
I'm totally stoked.

Image

Here's the bag it came in.

Image

This little fellow comes in quite usefull at times.

Image

This is everything I used in this picking attempt, all of it proved usefull

Image

So to sum it up,
First MTL picking attempt, start to finish in 47 mins!

I have contacted the MTL rep and he says he might be able to get a key cut for it, now it is open :D I hope so.

Thank you very much for reading this far, you are kind.

Im not sure if close up shots of the picks should be shown here.
I might be being a little over cautious, but I dont really want to post something I shouldnt. :?
But if a mod confirms it is ok, I would be more than happy to rattle off close ups of all the pick ends.

Tough one, on one hand undimensioned pics of the tips would be ok in my eyes and no differant to other pics of tols in the public sections but they are tools for security locks so by definition should perhaps be kept for the advanced sections,
If it helps i can provide ray with what he wants and keep this thread free of them but if you post them up i wont remove them but keep dimensions off them and following discussion please,

Would you mind sending rai what he requires?
I think there's enough pics here already.

Well done :-)
I have the same set of tools, a MTL euro profile and some beer.....
About an hour so far , nearly there but not quite yet :-(

The great thing about the euro profile is you can take one side apart, which I did ( nasty pins!) and still have the other side intact.

I did get one of the picks stuck in there, and I mean stuck, very stuck!!
Pretty bent out of shape by the time I got it out, but put it back into shape and it's still good to go.

It is a tricky lock, but doable !

Again well done .

Yes, I had a set and a few of the picks did have beveled edges.

Hey Ranger, when you get a pick stuck in a practice lock, before you use force, use oil, a drop of 3in1 oil will possibly help the as you try to get the pick out, try to remember the movement that got it stuck and do the reverse, you might also use a straight blade, like a probe made for doing the pin count, to lift all the pins back to the place where its stuck and then try to lift the pin that may be part of the problem, use oil on that straigt blade before inserting. if necessary grip the pick with a plier, and pull straight out, dont use a plier to bend the pick in any way,
A stuck pick probably involves the pick head being inside the pin drilling, and possibly jammed alongside the pin. lifting the pin with another tool may help, pressing down on the stuck pick is the second resort, but remember, its probably stuck because its unable to move down, this could be a function of the warding getting below it. so gentle twisting of the pick might help, if this dosent get it loose, put the straight blade under it and try to shift the pick tip with that, as the shaft of the pick is unable to move it because its flexing because the tip is jammed,

If your picks are well sanded, this will not be a frequent problem.
never do anything to a pick that may break it off in the lock,
if you have the lock in hand, you might smak it on a soft wood surface in a direction that will send the pins back into the 'bible'.

Thanks for the advice Ray :-)
It actually got stuck between the bottom and top of the keyway, between the wards at the back of the lock. As I was trying to lift a pin at the back ( with perhaps a little too much enthusiasm ) it turned into a vertical position.

It was to far back to get any torque to turn it with any tool I had, it was really well stuck !
It's the only time I ever got a pick stuck in a lock, and lesson learned !
