I was just wondering what type of picks you prefer, homemade ones or ones you buy. I prefer picks that I buy because I not that good at making picks at the moment.

I have to admit i havent made any picks but i have made tension wrenches and they just feel good to use. There is a something "feel good" about using and succeeding with something you have created yourself.

That's a big part of it.

The other part is that you can tailor any given tool to your specific style, hand size, or any other variable. Whereas you don't have that option with purchased picks.

I have made my own picks and tension wrenches, but I prefer profesional picks.

Unfortunately i have yet to manufacture a pick that i like as much as the set i bought. Most of the recent picks i have made look really good. grinded well, filed evenly. just at a glance it looks just like my store bought set. But when i try to use the picks i make they stick too much on the pins, and i cant seem to feel them as well. *sigh*

I had to vote for the mass produced option just because it isn't really forth a lot of my time to make my own...That said I will modify the life out of any tool I buy if it doesn't do exactly what I need it to. I'm looking at ways to modify some older rakes right now to try out on one of the new PKS keyways from best. These look like they are going to be a challenge.

I prefer professional picks because you know it's the original thing. Homemade ones are just as good though but I just like the clean look the professional ones have and plus you get dencent handles with the professional ones.

Home made picks.

Postby Romstar » 23 May 2004 21:51

Okay, okay.

I am having problems finding the minature rivets used to hold handles on. Does anyone know where to get these things? My original supplier says they can't get them any longer.

If anyone can supply these, or knows where to get them, I would be very grateful.

I have other things I am working on for handle materials. But I sort of need these rivets.

I have some other home made picks I'll post pictures of. It's not hard to make duplicates of so-called professional ones.

As far as rivets go I cant help you, but as for duplicating "pro picks," it is exactly what i have been attempting to achieve, but my homemade picks just don't compare in feel. I'm all about feeling the pins perfectly.

There's no option in the poll for both!

I'd say I prefer professionally made picks but I make my own when their shapes & dimensions fall short of what I want.
