The OP asked about securing the place with a lock from the hardware store, that is just the wrong paradigm, If you want security, go to the best locksmith in your area, he will sell locks the hardware store dosn't have and he will know how to install them He will understand your issues better than you do, if he asks questions, the truthful answer will make the place more secure, if you blow him off on a question, he will blow you off on the security you need.
