Ok just a quick question I think is OK even though it deals with high security locks. What requirements does a person have to have inorder to sell pattented keys from some of the main brands. Say like Abloy, Medco...

I am in no way asking how to bypass so this in my opionion is not for the advanced forums.

You would normally be a dealer of those locks,

To be a dealer you have to enter into a contract with the lock people,

This allows you to cut keys, sell the locks etc etc,

Ive only looked into the MTL thing and with that you got pinning kits and key machines along with some stock all for a decent figure (you didnt think the contracts were free did you?) and then that would make you an authorised dealer,

As regards cutting keys to work in a lock?

If you can get the blank, cut the key and make you money,

note that each state has a different set requirements - you should check it out with your local authorities

If a key isnt to be copied you wont get the blank to do it, if you can get the blank it cant be very well restricted,

You know your being iffy if you have to pull strings or go somewhere special to get the blank,

For dealing with Abloy, you have to be Abloy-certified locksmith/reseller/whatever. Here in Finland it means 4 months of working in Abloy-certified lockfirm and then you go for 2 week long course which is held by Abloy. I don't know the thing with non-restricted keys (Classic), but with restricted this is the way it goes around here :)

No I knew it wouldn't be free. I just wonted to know if they had a long string of requirments. I thought about contacting the companies, however; I don't realy plan on becoming a profetional looksmith so they probaly wouldn't help me out much. I just don't think locksmithing would pay me the kind of money I am going to get with programming. However it is realy interesting to know how stuff works and this is a very fun topic.

Oh by the way I am upgradding all my padalocks this weekend, and going to install new locks in my home soon. I have came to the conclution on one thing though. Security is just a made up word...There is no such thing.

I'm so sorry that you feel that way. I know a few programmers that make more than some locksmiths and some locksmiths that make more than some programmers. I know some of both that do not make enough to pay their monthly bills and buy groceries, but I also know some of both that clear well into the 6 digit marks each year consistently (some 7).

There is a lot of money out in the world to be made. You just have to figure out how to make it. Honestly, it's not that hard to do.

Most mfg's will require a contract and a buy in. If you want true restricted keyways, then you will have to come out of pocket with $3,000 min of hardware plus machines. You will also be required to purchase a minimum dollar amount of hardware each year to keep your contract current.

If you just want semi-restricted, then you can get into some for as little as $500 with $300 per year and no special equipment needed.

You will have to sign up through a distributor no matter how you go. You can not just sign up with the mfg's directly unless you have a very fat wallet.
