Imperial fire escape deadlock

Postby sirbigs » 10 May 2007 7:59

Hello, I have been working my way through the numerous posts on this site, for some time, and thought it was time to start contributing. Well thought I would seek some advice anyway.

I have just finished fitting one of these (a G9764), and was wondering if anyone has had any experiance fitting them. If anyone has, is there an easy way of doing it. The lock did not come with any instructions, so it ended up taking quite a long time to fit.

For those not familiar with these locks, it is like a standard deadlock, but it has a handle coming out of the bottom of the lock case. The deadlock operates normally with a standard cylinder, but in the event of an emergency, you can break a breakglass, and access the handle to retract the bolt.

The break glass is fitted on to the escuteon plate. below the cylinder. The break glass just acts as a cover to the hole where the handle is operated from.

These pictures are from the Imperial locks web site. I hope it explains things a little better that I am!

Ive fixed your links and made them to links as we dont allow hotlinked images on this site,

How did you do it?

I havent fitted one of these to date but maybe a mortice jig would be a good choice here?

I ended up cutting the mortice out, as you would for a standard lock.
Then drilled down at an angle through the mortice, to create a hole for the handle. I then finished off by marking where the hole needed to be on the front of the door, and cut this out.

It worked, but I am thinking it might be quicker if I made a template for cutting the hole for the handle and routing it out, rather than drilling through the mortice. I might have a play one day.

Sorry about the hotlinks, I was following a how too, on a sticky by whitehat, in the FAQ, and general section.

Maybe a pattern for drilling the hole first then choppin gout the mortice would work well,

To be honest in the same situation i would have done the same as you did,
