Okay I'm debating getting one of these to replace this crappy combo lock I have, but from what the seller describes, this lock uses the old "wedge" style shackle retention mechanism which are shim'able, can anyone confirm this? If so I'll have to pass...

Eh, actually the locker when I go to the gym and places like that with higher theft/traffic... I mean my crappy lock does just fine, but I've always wanted one of these and it would make a 1000% improvement upon what I'm using now... but it's not going to be used for anything "high" security... that's what I got this for:

Far as I know it's pretty secure; 6-pins + 9 depth key cuts, it's got mastering pins like BEST locks which are very difficult to pick - I'm not sure if it has security pins... I'll have to take it apart further to tell... I don't know if anyone would bother trying to pick this lock it's just too stout. Cutting with anything but an angle grinder or Fireman's hydraulic boron-certified cutter is useless. It's HEAVY... 7/16th shackle and the guards are a about 1/3" lol... I haven't tried to pick it as I'm going to use it for my bike lock, but a few attempts couldn't hurt... I'll keep everyone posted...

what do you mean by mastering pins? And security pins?
'Master pins' are used when keying up a lock to accept 2 or more different key codes. This creates more shear lines making it easier to pick.
'Security pins' are designed to frustrate picking, due to false shearlines and such. http://www.crypto.com/photos/misc/lockpins/ has a few good quality shots of security pins.
Is this what you're meaning? Or are your definitions mixed?

Not sure about the 8077 but I have the 8088 and it does infact use the "wedge" style shackle retention mechanism on both sides of the shackle but it is not shimable as there is a flat steel ring that goes around the shackle in a groove (kinda like a circlip)on the back side just above the notch making it impossible to get a shim in there. I would imagine the 8077 is most likley the same as I believe it was the replacement for the 8088.

Yes, the 8077AD is the replacement of the 8088. The 8077AD is not shimmable, and why would sargent let that happen? They use this lock as a tamper-evident seal lock. They, assuming they're not ignorant, would be complete idiots to make a seal lock with an easy bypass.

Hmm ,I always wondered what those rings were for .. never considered shimming .. Then again I don't think I have ever shimmed a padlock .
As said above the 8077xx , 8088xx are used for tamper proof security seals ..the one I took apart years ago , had delron wheels ( maipulation proof ) . You can't take one apart without visiable damage.
I bought a bunch (10?) from a military surplus auction ( DMRO)for like $1.00 @ years ago ..
All locked.. no combos , several were on the shipping combo of 50- 25- 50 or 25 - 50- 25 .
I swear the story below is true
I was on the phone talking to my mother.. yes we all know how the conversation goes.. have you been eating right , washing behind your ears, staying away from loose women, ect. Well, I was listening and fiddling with one of the locks, when It popped it open……hmmmm ok…. so I reach in the box and grab another,, conversation goes on for a while .. opened a second one !
I don’t know what happened .. the combos are not discernable when the lock is open , so I have no idea what the combo was .
What are the odds ? Well there are 50 numbers around the dial .. 3 number combo 50x50x50 – 125,000 possible combos even with “ forbidden numbers†taken out that still leaves apx 100,000 possibilities.
Never been able to do it again ( unless it was set to the shipping combo )

Technically, they are 4 number combos, but the last number is always 0 (at least on my 8077, which I forgot the combo to)

Thanks for all the great info folks: So how much do you think that this lock is worth then on auction? The dude wants $20 S/H which is outrageous in itself! And someone already bid it up $12!... I know it's a great lock, but for an auction on a used one?

They go on ebay all the time. Watch them for awhile to get a feel for current prices. Good seal locks. Get an S&G with a medeco plug for brute force resistance, or the Railroad one with the disc mechanism for durability.
All 3 will stump a drug addict with a set of southords.

AHH Medeco core?! Now that sounds hot... but I'm talking about the combo lock just for locker type stuff. Nothing where a dude can walk up with 42" cutters or other nefarious brute force tools in a crowded locker room. Just something that's annoying enough to prevent inconspicuous fiddling around with it etc... b/c I can pop those stupid combo ones off in seconds w/o the combo and w/o drawing attention. That is the type of person I'm concerned about etc...
Far as fleabay goes... yeah the only ones that I've seen in this model or above (that aren't heavily used) guy is selling them no-reserve, but $20 shipping & Handling scam + Whatever someone bids on top of that. So far it's $35+ already b/c of the S/H... Anyhow keep the posts/ideas coming and thanks all!

Unless they're very well made, combination locks have somewhat loose tolerances, and can still be opened if you're a digit off, and sometimes more than that. Using only the even numbers, there are 'only' about 15,000 possible combinations. With an efficient method, you should be able to get the combination within six hours or so of working on it.
