Hey all,
well i'm new to the forum and new to the sport, I'm hopin to get to the store this weekend to get some blades to make some picks :)
But legality issues, (i did do a quick search) come first. I live in Wisconsin, and according to the legality thread, it says it okay to have them in your house, but not say..in your car or outside your house. Well I want to carry them with me in case i get locked out of my house, out of our car, et cetera. So I'm basically wondering, what is the probability of getting caught, and how do they do it??? I just don't wanna be busted for this, especially as I am a minor, gettin a felony on my record would kinda suck a little, so yea. So basically i want to know, what is the probability of getting caught, and how do they catch you??? Can they just pull you over randomly or what??
Anyone have any good concealment ideas?? I was thinkin of just makin a jackknife style one, and puttin some actual blades in it to make it look real, but what do you all think??
Thanks, and happy picking

yea well we dont have extra car keys...But i probably won't be able to do that for a while..good point.
Yea i probably would be better off just leaving them at home, though I really want to take them on vacation, when i have nothing else to do, to practice with. But seeing as I am a minor, yea, Class I felony wouldn't look too good on the record. Ah well, guess I should be happy they are actually legal in my home

Don't conceal.
If you want to take them on vacation, just pack them in your normal checked luggage and go on your way.

Really, DO NOT CONCEAL!!! Then if you get busted, the Cop will know you know that it's wrong.

I'm sure a locksmith or car dealership would be happy to make you an extra set of car keys. stealth'n'wealth wrote:what is the probability of getting caught, and how do they catch you?
The wording of this question concerns me...

the chances are higher than its worth. hobby picking is something to do with you free time. i think most of us have had to carry them to open a door for some one (don't do it till you know what you are doing) but then you have a reason to carry them.
get a second copy of your keys made. of leave a copy with some one u trust
All the best

This is what I do. I get a copy of my key made, then I take a handful of pottery clay and then pack the key into the clay. Shape the clay into whatever shape and form you like (I prefer something close to a rock or dog doo) and look for a safe place about half a mile to a mile away from your house to conceal and stash it away. Check up on it now and then. If it goes missing, re-key your home and look for a better place to hide your "doggy doo" next time.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Keep something with you that doesn't qualify as a lockpick but could be modified as such in an emergency.
If you can't wing it with paperclips, you could use a tiny drill bit to perferate a pickhead outline on a pick blank with a squared off tip. Scribe weaken the perferations. A half diamond head would be ideal.
Ditto on an unbent tension wrench. As neither are lockpicks until modified, they aren't burglary tools.
In emergency, break the perferation lines and grind the edges smooth on a sidewalk. Add some bumpkeys to your keychain. Duplicate a modified bump key at a hardware store and it becomes an unmodified key to a sloppy lock.
Can you say "walking on thin ice?"

Why would you carry lockpicks in place of spare keys?

If its during the day then its highly unlikely that the police will just randomly search you (unless you are doing something sketchy), so it really shouldn't be a problem. However, I wouldn't recommend carrying them on you at night. If you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the police happen to search you because they think you may be carrying drugs or something... you could be in trouble!
Besides, you shouldn't be picking the lock on your door or car anyway. Never picks locks that you rely on because you can and most likely will damage them. So really, instead of just spending a little money on a spare key, you could end up having to buy a whole new lock!

k guys thanks, i think i'll take the good old putty trick that was suggested.
I didn't mean to make it sound like I'm trying to break the law, cuz im NOT, don't want to, I actually want to go into the Marines when I get older, so yea..
Why shouldn't i conceal, is it like if they see that I'm not trying to, they probably won't bust me, because it will probably seem that I'm obviously not doing something illegal??
K thanks guys, sorry for any confusion, will probably just leave them at home

your user name worries me. like you're trying to be obivous about possible criminal manouvers in stealthily getting in places and stealing things to get wealth.
as far as concealment.. do you mean that you have them in your pocket, or in an unusual place like inside a big fat marker or a secret pocket in your book bag?
sounds like you're trying to be a sneaky spy guy thief type.
we do the picking for fun, not to skulk around the hood at night trying to pick sheds open and steal dirtbikes.
hope you dont have the wrong idea of what the purpose of this site is for.

Amazing the amount of people that feel the need to carry around a set of picks in case they loose their keys, and blissfully ignore that fact that just because you have a set of picks don't mean you can open any lock you happen to have lost the keys for !!!!
Funny that
